Pittsfield Mass. Radio Station Drops Rush Limbaugh After Contraception Controversy

Source: New England Public Radio

A commercial radio station in Pittsfield, Massachusetts-- 96.9 FM, WBEC-- says it is dropping the Rush Limbaugh show in the wake of Limbaugh's comments on contraception last week.

Limbaugh called a Georgetown University Law student a "slut" and a "prostitute" after she testified before Congress about women's limited access to contraception. Since then, eight corporations including AOL, Quicken Loans and Carbonite have pulled their advertising from the show. WBEC's General Manager Peter Barry says his station hadn't yet lost any advertisers as a result of Rush's comments, and no more than a handful of callers had voiced complaints. But he says over the years he and station staff have grown increasingly uncomfortable with Limbaugh's rhetoric.

"The nature of Rush's programming has always presented challenges for us and he's always pushed the envelope. But this time he's taken it too far."

But at least this is a start. Some major cities can hear Limbaugh on as many as FOUR stations at once...one or even two local, the rest distant strong AM signals. For example, where I live, my local Limbaugh affiliate is KKSF 910 (starting this year after KSFO 560 from the mid '90s to 2011). Also, three distant AM stations that are Limbaugh affiliates for their areas reach my city because of being 5 kW or more in power...KSCO 1080 Santa Cruz, KFBK 1530 Sacramento, and KMJ 580 Fresno. Similarly in Cleveland with TWO local stations: WTAM 1100 Cleveland and WHLO 640 Akron...both of which are labeled "Newsradio" despite being a real news station only in the mornings and right wing trash the rest. Clevelanders can also hear Limbaugh on two distant stations: WKBN 570 Youngstown and WJR 760 Detroit.

In the northeast, the radio dial is crowded. I noticed that I could pick up a lot of the same right-wing windbag type of shows on several different AM stations at once. Finding liberal talk, real news, and intelligent discussion of local current affairs was much more difficult.

a few years ago. I had a great station that had Air America. Loved to listen. The one day they were gone and it was replaced with a Spanish station. Then the only place I could listen (In Austin of all places) was online, which was no good when I was driving.
And I can't get Air America on my iPhone for some reason. Would love to be able to listen on the bus.

The search feature will let you search for radio stations live-streaming progressive hosts across the country. They even have a progressive talk category.

Don't search for Air America though. They don't exist anymore, but most of their former hosts have joined other syndication networks.

They model absolute rudeness. For hours every day, their listeners hear them speaking so disrespectfully to and about anyone who disagrees with them, and they come to think that's a normal and acceptable way to interact with other people. So they behave exactly the same way.

clones who are just as bad or even worse than the genuine article. One example is Atlanta's Neal Boortz. All the hate and erectile dysfunction of a Limbaugh broadcast, but with an extra helping of constipation and male pattern baldness.
