North Korean Leader Warns Of Nuclear Disaster, Threatens US
Source: Sydney Morning Herald
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said the Korean peninsula will be engulfed by ''massive nuclear disaster'' if war breaks out there again, warning the US it will not be safe in the event of a conflict.
''If the war breaks out again in this land, it will bring about a massive nuclear disaster and the US will never be safe,'' Kim said in his New Year message, broadcast on state television.
''We are faced with a dangerous situation in which a small, accidental military clash can lead to an all-out war.''
Mr Kim added he would not beg for peace and vowed to protect the impoverished but nuclear-armed North with strong self-defence measures against enemies.

Mock this little turd all you want but the fact of the matter is, he has nuclear weapons and we haven't a clue who we are dealing with here...

(11,709 posts)North Korea is a real problem that needs to be resolved but we flittered away our prestige bombing Iraq into dust so now most countries are hesitant to follow our lead when we say that something has to be done about North Korea.
Of course, I'm not really hearing anyone in government actually saying much about North Korea - only Iran and Syria.

(22,000 posts)Part of the problem is that so much focus is put on the Middle East it takes our eye off what is happening in Asia. It's not just the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, conflicts in Syria, unrest in Egypt, etc. The Middle East sucks so much time and resources out of our country it is just disgusting. While I think we should help, countries who are not cooperating in way that fosters peace should get nothing. No financial aid, no food, nothing.

(9,462 posts)Clinton for it, but it's not true. They did it under Bush while he was asleep at the wheel. It also adds an interesting dimension to their arguments about Obama not being tough enough on Iran going nuclear.

But anyway, that's terrible if they have nukes. Now a nuke war is on the table. Holy fuck..

(9,462 posts)and China have helped them develop it. Russia has helped Iran develop theirs as well. We have defense systems to intercept such rockets/bombs/missles and I don't know of anyone in the military community who think N Korea has a weapon advanced enough to escape detection and intervention. Not even close, in fact.
IDY if you remember N Korea testing a rocket. They had one that went right into the ocean. They launched another (they said they were putting a satellite in orbit, but everyone thought they were lying) that was successful. At that time, we sent some super aircraft that goes into space to have a little look-see at what NK was up to. Whatever they launched didn't seem to concern us too much.

(4,651 posts)Is contingent on China. China could quash NK like a bug if it wanted but for many reasons it allows them to do what they do both in rhetoric and in deed.

If NK falls to South Korea, then the USA would be in there like a dirty shirt.
China is already unhappy with amount of US military snooping around their coast, aligning itself with Japan, South Korea, Taiwan etc.
I think the World would be wise to leave NK alone. I do not believe NK has any plans to attack anyone unless provoked.
NK is well aware that either USA or China can out-nuke them, but they are fiercely independent, although poor. Iraq and Afghanistan will seem like walks in the park if NK gets fully engaged by anyone.
Stay away from that hornets nest or you're gonna get stung.
Badly.

(22,000 posts)and if things get worse then go in and take the government over. China has not been too terribly happy with what North Korea has done recently. North Korea is kind of the step-child you don't want.

(19,274 posts)After the debacles the US has had in Iraq and Afghanistan, it wouldn't be very smart to try the same method of regime change we fucked up with.
The last thing China wants is a leaderless NK, with 20 million starving North Koreans rushing their border.

(22,000 posts)the two wars we got ourselves into. The Kim family has abused their people for decades (granted the Chinese wouldn't be that much better). If they need to, I believe they probably will. They'll have to seal the boarders which will be costly. The alternative would be North Korea starting a war with Japan and South Korea which would be much more dangerous. Either way China would have to back North Korea.
Sen. Walter Sobchak
(8,692 posts)And what he said was China is basically in the same situation with North Korea as South Africa is in with Zimbabwe. As the regional hegemonic power they could militarily neutralize the respective basket case regimes but then they're stuck with occupying and rebuilding massively failed states. All the while it doesn't really serve any strategic objective.
And for political reasons Korean reunification wouldn't exactly be an acceptable outcome for the hardliners who still want to pretend they're communists. (my comment, not his)

(6,852 posts)N. Korea Wondering What It Has To Do To Attract U.S. Military Attention
PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREAAs the U.S. continues to inch toward war with Iraq, a jealous and frustrated North Korea is wondering what it has to do to attract American military attention. "What does it take to get a few F-16s or naval warships deployed to the Yellow Sea?" North Korean president Kim Jong Il asked Monday. "In the past month and a half, we've expelled U.N. nuclear inspectors, withdrawn from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, restarted a mothballed nuclear complex capable of producing weapons-grade plutonium, and threatened to resume missile tests. You'd think that would be enough to get a measly Marine division or two on standby in the Pacific, but apparently not."
Kim said his nation is "way more deserving" of B-52 deployment than Iraq.
"Bush says his number one priority is eliminating weapons of mass destruction, but he sure doesn't act that way," Kim said. "Iraq may have weapons of mass destruction and may be developing more. The DPRK, on the other hand, does have weapons of mass destruction and isn't about to stop making them any time soon."
"Can I be any more clear?" Kim continued. "We have nuclear bombs and delivery methods. Kablooey! There goes Anchorage! But does Bush care? Nopehe just goes on about how we're 'a diplomatic issue, not a military one.' If he even mentions us at all, that is."

(2,347 posts)Their push against their neighbors, and in this case specifically SK and Japan, is helped by having a wild lunatic like him as an ally. You don't really want to mess with China when they've got a rabid skunk like this who may not be able to do lethal damage, but can distract you enough that when the really lethal attack begins you'll be looking the wrong way, or entirely blinded.
It's not like the US doesn't know this of course. I have a feeling if things really got hot the Chinese will find that Jung's usefulness is rather seriously overrated. Nukes are like any other weapon; they have to be aimed and fired properly. NK has given the world no evidence it knows how to do either.
So, assuming the evidence is correct and those weapons are useless to them, and then given the fact there's maybe 10 people in NK who are actually well fed, the Chinese might find themselves with a very well fed and well equipped army on the Yalu somewhat more quickly than their war-games told them they'd have to face such a thing.

(2,983 posts)from North Korea, making threats against the US. No, of course Mr. Kim will not beg for peace, he is a sad little turd. I tell you though, that a real man in a position of power such as his, realizes that peace, is, perhaps, the only thing worth begging for. Arrogance... stubborn pride, foolishness. He could do far better for his Country than the former dear leader ever did, if he would simply abandon his ego and put the welfare of his people first. This is ridiculous. There is no reason we should ever have to fight the North Koreans, and no reason they should ever have to fight us.
You can have peace if you want it, Mr. Kim. Your threats are a waste of time, and energy.
