Paul May Support Unemployment Insurance Extension

Source: TPM

CAITLIN MACNEAL – JANUARY 5, 2014, 10:39 AM EST

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on Sunday said he could support extending the longterm unemployment benefits that expired at the end of 2013 if the program is paid for.

"I'm not against having unemployment insurance," he said on ABC's "This Week." "It needs to be payed for."

Paul has previously expressed caution about extending the longterm benefits. But he said that if Congress came up with a way to pay for the benefits, and if Paul could add a provision about economic freedom zones, he may support reinstating the benefits.

Earlier, a reference to "fast-tracking" an unemployment benefits extension, and now a reference to "economic freedom zones" as a precondition to extend the benefits.

It's a stretch I know. But I'm just saying.

Rand Paul spreads lies about unemployment insurance

Logic does not seem to be Sen. Rand Paul's friend. Opposing an extension of emergency unemployment benefits that go beyond 26 weeks, he:

... pointed to a study that showed employers are less likely to hire the long-term unemployed.
"When you allow people to be on unemployment insurance for 99 weeks, you're causing them to become part of this perpetual unemployed group in our economy. And it really - while it seems good, it actually does a disservice to the people you're trying to help," Paul said.

Hey Rand Paul get behind a policy. You would deny further unemployment benefits because they are 'a disservice' or you would support them if paid for elsewhere in the budget. Find a principle to hang your mop on.

by helping big boxes drum out established tax-paying businesses. Very bad idea as cities lose twice.

unemployment insurance benefits! Yikes! That's money that the umemployed spend right away! Not doing it could also CAUSE more unemployment among workers who provide the needed food and services that the unemployed need in order to live in their daily lives! It will only WORSEN our economy!
