Reid: GOP Needs To Stop 'Being Republicans In Congress'

Source: Talking Points Memo

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Sunday said that in order for the government to extend longterm unemployment benefits, Republican lawmakers need to stop being themselves.

Reid said that the "vast majority of American people," including conservatives, support extending unemployment insurance, but that GOP lawmakers do not.

"This is typical for Republican members of Congress. Not Republicans. Republican members of Congress," Reid said of the GOP's opposition to longterm unemployment benefits on CBS' "Face the Nation."

"We've got to turn this around," he said. "I have nothing against rich people. But the rich are getting richer. The poor are getting poorer. The middle class is being squeezed out of existence."

we restrict "Republican" to the conservative voter, while for the conservative members of Congress (politicians) we use the the term "cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit[."

Republicans "no longer represent real Americans". THAT would get the conversation started on "Face The Fascist Nation."

True, the Democrats need an opposition party. However, America would be better off without this opposition party.

If the GOP gets swept into the dustbin of history, then something will rise to challenge establishment Democrats. No political party is a tent big enough to encompass everybody from Bernie Sanders to Jim Inhofe.

This is a salvo in the 2014 elections aimed at peeling off Republican votes that would usually go to Republican politicians. If successful, it would be an ironic historical turn to create a generation of "Obama Republicans" in the way the GOP in the eighties enjoyed the benefits of "Reagan Democrats."

18. Actually what today's GOP has become is a far cry from being Republicans

If you think of the great republicans throughout history like Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln and Dwight Eisenhowser - they were actually pretty moderate compared to today's GOP party. Think about it - it was the Republicans that halped pass LBJ's Civil Rights bill when Dixie Democrats like Strom Thurmond filibustered against it. It was T. Roosevelt that created one of our country's best conservation laws with the creation of the National Parks Service. Even on Social Issues Richard Nixon was more like today's democrats than today's republicans. It was only when the religious right/and anti-minorities dug their claws into the Republican Party and moved them to where they are today.

So to be honest if the GOP party acted like true republicans, smaller government including less interference on personal issues, I think we would all be happy!
