Some states confirm water pollution from drilling

Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A review by The Associated Press has found that in at least four states that have nurtured the nation’s energy boom, hundreds of complaints have been made about well-water contamination from oil or gas drilling.

Pollution was confirmed in a number of them, casting doubts on industry suggestions that such problems rarely happen. The AP requested recent data on drilling-related complaints from Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Texas and found major differences in how the states report such problems. Texas provided the most detail, while the other states provided general outlines.

Pennsylvania received almost 900 complaints in 2012 and 2013 alleging that oil or natural gas drilling polluted or affected private water wells. In recent years Texas recorded 62 complaints, Ohio at least 99 and West Virginia 122.

Some of the complaints are still being investigated.

Even if the state was nothing but scorched earth after oil and gas production things would not change.

They always require more evidence.

good luck in assessing who did it. If there are multiple wells then it will be hard to pinpoint who is responsible and the land owner will probably have to foot the bill to prove who did it. Without some clear cut laws assigning blame the affected party will be looking at years of analysis from expensive experts before there is any hope of recovering something from their loss. The anthracite coal regions of PA are a good model for what happens when the extraction industry gets its way; strip mine wastes and acid mine runoff that the public ultimately winds up paying for.

they can get their greedy hands on...

You want clean water...$20 dollars a gallon bub or drink our frack fluid.

And people used to say in the 70's that you couldnt sell water...its more expensive than gasoline by a factor of 5 or 6

8 pints to a gallon...regular bottle water is 2.80 per pint

8 x 2.80 = $22.40 dollars per gallon...WOW what a racket!

when are people going to say enough?

It's 95 cents a gallon up the street from me.

Not that I disagree about the awful situation and the downfall of civilization...
