CNN Poll: Support for legal marijuana soaring

Posted at 8:00 pm by: CNN Political Unit

Washington (CNN) — In a major turnaround from past decades, a majority of Americans support legalizing marijuana, according to a new poll.

The CNN/ORC International survey released Monday also indicated that the number of people who say smoking pot is morally wrong has plunged.

Fifty-five percent of those questioned nationally said marijuana should be made legal, with 44% disagreeing.

The CNN/ORC findings are similar to a Gallup poll conducted in October.

According to the CNN poll and numbers from General Social Survey polling, support for legalizing marijuana has steadily soared over the past quarter century — from 16% in 1987 to 26% in 1996, 34% in 2002, and 43% two years ago.

has occurred despite the best efforts of the government and other powerful forces (the prison industry, drug & alcohol producers, etc.) to hold the line on public opinion. If the massive anti-pot propaganda effort is failing, what other massive propaganda efforts might not soon follow suit?

Already "socialism" is more popular than "capitalism" among the young. More and more we see the lie being given to the conventional wisdom that this is a "center-right" country.

and realized the anti-pot propaganda was way over the top and did not mesh with real life. Meanwhile, enough people in the older generations who never tried pot have simply died off.

Have tipped the scales irreversibly towards full legalization.

I think many other states are now thinking, "hey, we want it
all legal here too!! "

Cool man.

is that WA state and CO are not bastions of stupidity. They are among the highest educated states in the country. Almost everyone younger than fifty has been to at least one party where friends were smoking weed. And in most cases that friend smoking weed wasn't a degenerate, a loser, or mindless vagrant or whatever stereotypes the government tried throwing out there...

I do believe there is a major problem with federalism and the issue of nullification. While I hope more states get on board to stop enforcing their own laws, the real battle isn't won until we get politicians at a federal level to change marijuana's classification. At the least we need a push by the executive branch announcing support for re categorization schedule-wise. But I don't expect that from this administration, or even the next.

When a majority of the states have "legalized it" the federal government won't have much of a choice (you'd think).

It will be at that point they will pass an amendment to the US constitution to legalize weed (one can dream).

His DHHS fucked up royally by sending 50,000 Medicaid cards to the wrong addresses. At a press conference, not surprisingly, he blamed Democrats, and managed a Colorado pot joke.

McCrory joked that anyone who believes such a large and complex department could be fixed so quickly “has probably spent time in Colorado in the past week.” He was referring to the legal sales of marijuana for recreational use in Colorado, which began last Wednesday.

Lying about attending Moral Mondays, using "Democrat" improperly, calling a protester into the middle of the street to hand her a plate of cookies, taking swipes at Colorado legalization... the list goes on and on.

If you haven't read the 1.5.14 N&O letters to the editor, do it. So much was touched on: tax cuts for the wealthy, raising the minimum wage, voter suppression, Trickle Down Economics, Republican bad behavior... it was pretty inspiring!

Long time coming. It's gonna be legal sooner than you think both medically and recreationally, especially when states see the revenue Colorado pulls in thru taxation on it.

was overturned because the government needed the revenue from the taxes on liquor. That and someone realized the resources being squandered on prohibition enforcement.
Reefer madness is rooted in bigotry and superstition, neither of which is sound basis for legislation.

lowering the GDP by up to 1/4. (Burns' doc on PBS maybe?) Anyway, the Fed's had nothing (tax revenue) to fall back on at the beginning of the Depression - kinda like what the 'pugs are doing now the economy.

As much as I like Tommy Chong and the 'Up in Smoke' movies with Cheech, they made pot smokers look like imbeciles.

In fact, most of the people that smoke would never be recognized as such.
