Eight current and former members of the U.S. military allege in a new federal lawsuit that they were raped, assaulted or harassed during their service and suffered retaliation when they reported it to their superiors.
The lawsuit, being filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Washington, accuses the military of having a high tolerance for sexual predators in their ranks and of fostering a hostile environment that discourages victims of sexual assault from coming forward and punishes them when they do. The suit says the Defense Department has failed to take aggressive steps to confront the problem despite public statements suggesting otherwise.
The eight women include an active-duty enlisted Marine and seven veterans of the Navy and Marine Corps. Seven women allege that a comrade raped or tried to sexually assault them, including in a commanding officers office after a pub crawl in Washington and inside a Navy barracks room in Florida. The eighth says she was harassed and threatened while deployed overseas, only to be told by a superior that this happens all the time.

Updated with a better link.
This is an example of why Rush needs to be gone from Armed Forces Network. I am not blaming Rush for these women being assaulted, but it is precisely the words, the attack, and the vitriol displayed by Limbaugh that provides "cover" for these assaults to be excused, or swept under the rug.
If a women speaks up...She's declared a "slut".
If a women wears an attractive skirt...She's declared a "slut".
If a women advances up the ranks...she's declared a "prostiture and a whore".
No, I'm not blaming Rush, but the relevancy of this story is broadened when you consider Rush' misogynistic rants are broadcast to our men...AND WOMEN...in uniform.

(15,344 posts)this is so important, and so relevant in light of all the news today.
The military is coming out and saying; "we have a problem, we need to take action, and respect and protection of our troops is so impotant". They are saying; "we need victims of sexual assault to know they can come forward without suffering repercussions, or shame"...and yet...AFN broadcasts misogynistic crap like Limbaugh

(2,335 posts)I hjave hear first hand accounts of women who served that rape and assault is institutionalized in the military. This needs to come to an end. Military is 30 years behind the times.

(16,375 posts)Of military women. But of course you've nailed it. (pun not intended). His disgustingly sexist rants create an atmosphere of bigotry against women in general and strong women in particular. That's the best argument ever for yanking his disgustingness off AFR. Panetta and Obama would have to take it seriously.

(15,344 posts)is that I have spent 27 years serving in the Navy, and I love it. It's been great to me.
This is not what we are about. The vast majority of us uphold the Core Values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Statements like Limbaugh's are what are used to "dehumanize" women, not only in the military, but in every walk of life. It's the language of intimidation, and it is specifically designed to "put women in their place".
We worked hard to try to change the attitudes and the culture within the military. I was there as a Chief Petty Officer when we integrated women into combat ships. It was difficult, but it was damn well worth it. After I earned a commission, I was one of the few officers that actually worked for a women, who was one of the first Commanding Officers of a combat ship...and she was fantastic...one of the best leaders and ship-drivers I had ever seen.
I was greatly encouraged when Secretary of Defense Panetta appointed Major General Hertog to a newly created position on his staff as the Director of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office to specifically address this issue. You see - one of the major problems we have is that victims of sexual assault are afraid to come forward and report it, because they will be labled as "sluts" who "asked for it".
It's depressing that we are working hard to make progress, but the Armed Forces Network hosts and provides a forum for a misogynist to launch a verbal sexual assault against an innocent young woman.
Great message to send to our troop, huh?
I am a peaceful man, but if Rush Limbaugh were within my reach, I'd rip his lips off.
BTW - If you'd like to contact the Director of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office and ask what the impact of Limbaugh's words have on the mission of reducing sexual assault, here is the website. Contact link is at the top of their page.
Be nice and respectful if you do. These people are fighing the good fight.
