Gingrich spokesman: Alabama and Mississippi are must-wins

Source: The Hill

Newt Gingrich is canceling planned events in Kansas and instead pivoting his campaign to focus on racking up delegates in the Deep South, with campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond acknowledging Wednesday that the former Speaker needs wins in Alabama and Mississippi to remain a credible candidate.

“Everything between Spartanburg all the way to Texas, those all need to go for Gingrich,” said Hammond, according to The Washington Post.

The Wall Street Journal pressed Hammond as to whether Gingrich "has to win" in Alabama and Mississippi and whether the former Speaker's credibility rests on carrying the states next Tuesday.

Hammond responded affirmatively to each question.

to take it to Noot in both MS and AL, and defeat him handily there, after which he would call Noot a bad sport for staying in, and diluting the anti-Mitt vote.

7. Another Santorum tactic for beating Romney: drop out of the South.

I assume the Republican nomination, like the Democratic nomination, does not go to the candidate with the most delegates. But rather goes to the candidate that gets a majority of delegates.

To that end the far Right does not need one candidate to beat Romney. They need their combined candidates to beat him. First ballot at the convention, nobody has a majority, and the delegates are free to coelesce around a single far Right candidate.

If these southern states are winner-take-all states, it might make more sense for Santorum to drop out so Newt wins rather than taking a chance on the two of them splitting the extremist vote allowing Romney to sneak a victory.

If Newt wins nowhere but the South, you would think at the convention they would nominate a Santorum/Newt ticket.

Biggest danger there is pissing off the South. Should the entire South go for Newt, and Newt not be the eventual nominee....

Last night on Charlie Rose, one of the reporter-panelists said:

"Newt has been running in the State of Denial for the last several months."

It cracked me up.

5. Romney will carry the south in the general, and really - that's all that matters to him.

These primary races are just a bit of a warm up for his campaign. We can shout to the roofs for this to go on and on, but Romney is going to be the nominee. Stretching out the food fight does help us though.

I'll wait a bit before I make specific predictions for individual states.

I've lived in the South all of my life and I can tell you first hand that conservatives around here can't stand him. The main problem is that he's Mormon, and that's a cult to far too many of the Republican constituency here.

I look for Santorum and Gingrich to carry many of these states. One thing is for certain - Republicans are demoralized as hell by their choices of candidates. I do my part to rub salt in the wounds as much as I can because, well, frankly it's enjoyable to mock them.

Certainly there are still enough of them in the Deep South to keep Newt's campaign afloat.

....I don't believe it....

....I'll bet slick-willard, the rich wall-street Mormon, has offered the newt a high cabinet position so long as he stays in the race to split the God-puke and bagger vote....

....slick-willard, the rich wall-street Mormon, could then win the nomination and maybe the presidency, and the newt-ster could resume doing what he does best, feeding at the public trough....

....old slick-willard, that rich wall-street Mormon, is very cunning and sly....
