After 2-day break, new winter storm slams NYC

Source: USATODAY

After a brief. warm-weather break, Old Man Winter stormed back into the New York city area Monday with heavy snow for the morning commute and a forecast of 10 inches of snow in parts of the tri-state area by day's end.

As heavy rain changed to wet, heavy snow, forecasters expected as much as 2 inches per hour until mid-afternoon.

Winter storm warnings were issued for New York City, Long Island and most of New Jersey until 7 p.m. The National Weather Service cautioned residents against traveling except in an emergency.

..

While the storm held back until after the end of Super Bowl XLVIII in New Jersey, many out-of-towners could still get hit in the form of flight delays.

Winter storm warnings and advisories stretched from Utah to Vermont. The storm was also expected to drop as much as 8 inches on Ohio. As much as 2 inches an hour of snow may fall in New Jersey after 8 a.m., the weather service said.

Washington may get as much as 8 inches after 4 p.m., and Boston less than 0.5 inch as the storm focuses more on the corridor from Philadelphia to New York.

This stuff is heavy and wet. It's a pain to shovel.

I can usually get around OK in the light snow that comes with the really cold temps. But not the wet stuff. I have to wait for the plows to get in.

Rain/snow, maybe 1 inch of snow accumulation. Snowfall forecast to begin in DC at/after 1 pm, turning to 'light' snow at/after 3, and just 'cloudy' at/after 4.

8 inches in DC, as 'forecast' by bloomberg, would be seriously heart-stopping here!!!

Raining in southern extremities of DC area now.

around 8:30am but it's snowing pretty hard now (I'm in midtown Manhattan). With the schools closing in the burbs, lots of people working from home. We're already starting to worry about a storm scheduled for Sunday - a nor Easter that our local weather guy thinks is going to be bad.

Heavy and wet in NJ at 5:00 a.m. 202/206 and 287 are a mess. Folks need to work from home if they can out here in commuter land.

on the ground where I live but here in the city it's mostly a slushy mess but it is sticking. The commute home isn't going to be fun at all.

If they can predict wind a week in advance, we're probably in trouble.

Well, I already got one 3-day weekend due to a snowstorm - they closed my office ahead of time. Maybe we'll have another.
