A New Jersey State trooper assigned to Gov. Christies protective detail was arrested for theft in Pennsylvania early last month, and he tried to use that connection to duck the charges, police said.
During his Jan. 8 arrest, Trooper William A. Carvounis, 35, asked the police there for a break, Tilden, Pa., Chief William McEllroy said Monday.
We dont do that, said the chief.
Carvounis was arrested for stealing $267 worth of ammunition from Cabellas, a sporting goods retail chain in the township, which is about 32 miles west of Allentown, Pa.

Hmmm, a circle of corruption and lawlessness?
Wonder why this didn't come out way back on January 8?

(31,849 posts)Pretty good ... except for the daily prospect of having someone shoot at you.
Good Grief!
I'm not defending the alleged theft ... But we really do have to stop criticizing other working class folks, because they are well paid.

(8,515 posts)They think they are soldiers of freedom whom should be treated with deference from the those who pays their salary...Been happening for years, but 911 amped it up to 12...

(31,849 posts)and so would my father (R.I.P.). I think the 80/20 rule applies here ... 80% of cops are "good and faithful" public servants; but the 20% that are bad seed get all of the public's attention.
(And yes, that 20% should be rooted out)

(23,761 posts)because of their arrogant attitude and the sense that they project that they feel they are beyond reproach. Add to that the unjustified rhoid rage shootings they do, the concealing of evidence, or fixing cases for prosecutors and covering each others asses when tried...there are plenty of reasons to hate 'em.
My respect is for teachers. The shit they have to put up with on a daily basis and the unknown variables. They are truly the ones who shape our nation, yet are so disrespected and paid shit!

(31,849 posts)that explains the standard issued bullet-proof vests and gun that they wear and the advanced self-defense training they receive ... because the job is relatively safe.
But I guess relative is relative. It's less dangerous than, say, soldier; but more dangerous than librarian ... unless that librarian job happens to be in a school, a mall, or a theater.

(1,569 posts)or flying a plane or roofing. Cops may get a bullet proof vest, but their seat belt is far more important because most of the fatalities happen in ordinary traffic accidents.

Groundskeeping is a more dangerous occupation.

(31,849 posts)It's in the top ten most dangerous jobs but it's a relatively safe occupation? I guess it's all relative then.

(23,973 posts)When there are millions of people in other occupations in this nation who have a greater chance of being maimed or killed on the job than any LEO and no one pulls the old, "But they can die on any given day!" line in order to justify their wages...which are usually far, far lower for an occupation far, far more dangerous than being an LEO.
No one gives them a funeral with full honors and hundreds of other peace officers all on overtime showing up for the funeral.
They just get buried.

(147 posts)But the people who do this are not generally authoritarians with a psychological profile quite similar to that of criminals.
Police have sought a situation in which violence is expected, and embraced.
As bad as it is in the US, it is apparently even worse in the UK:
The entire criminal justice system was infiltrated by organised crime gangs, according to a secret Scotland Yard report leaked to The Independent.
In 2003 Operation Tiberius found that men suspected of being Britains most notorious criminals had compromised multiple agencies, including HM Revenue & Customs, the Crown Prosecution Service, the City of London Police and the Prison Service, as well as pillars of the criminal justice system including juries and the legal profession.
The strategic intelligence scoping exercise ratified by the most senior management at the Met {ed: Scotland Yard} uncovered jurors being bought off or threatened to return not-guilty verdicts; corrupt individuals working for HMRC, both in the UK and overseas; and get out of jail free cards being bought for £50,000.

Or, perhaps more likely, their media is simply more willing to report on police corruption and abuse?

Oh it's a real racket... Want a job? Get ready to write checks for "campaign" contributions to the gop... I've worked it, left it. What you do to get a job, you do more of to keep it.
Goes against my morals I was raised on and the same ones I raised my children with.

(28,209 posts)There are so many cops and public workers who drunk drive, speed, and do other things.
If they gets pulled over, there is a pecking order...
Lowest to highest:
Volunteer Fireman - Most local police, besides their own district, will give them a ticket.
Local Police - There is a tacit reciprocal agreement not to ticket, but some towns will.
State Police - Most every local town will give them a free pass.
In NJ, a State Trooper badge is a golden ticket.
