Berkeley police chief sends sergeant to reporter's home to request story changes

By Kristin J. Bender and Thomas Peele

Minutes after reading a late-night news story online about him that he perceived to be inaccurate, Berkeley Police Chief Michael Meehan ordered a sergeant to a reporter's home insisting on changes, a move First Amendment experts said reeked of intimidation and attempted censorship.

Meehans's actions were "despicable, totally despicable," said Jim Ewert, general counsel of the California Newspaper Publisher's Association. "It's the most intimidating type of (censorship) possible because the person trying to exercise it carries a gun."

Bay Area News Group reporter Doug Oakley said he was shaken by the 12:45 a.m. Friday knock on the door of his Berkeley home. He said at first he and his wife thought something was drastically wrong or perhaps that a relative had died.

Meehan apologized Friday.

It may be late at night and a few beers talking, but if that is the chief's excuse, the people that work for him should have better sense than to "just follow orders".

Meehan just wanted to set the record straight at 12:45 AM. He forgot phones had been invented and he couldn't wait a minute more.

This ain't over. A City Councilwoman is looking into it.

Now, everyone from sea to shining sea knows what a despicable, Constitution-crushing asshole he is!

Someone needs to pat that assclown on the back and tell him "Heckuva job, Brownie!"

Storm-trooper tactics are not a subject for apology. I hope this is attacked to the extent that no chief of police will ever consider such an attempt at censorship ever again.

They really think they are exempt from the law, that they are entitled to do whatever they want.

It's not the same as if some random bureaucrat had been sent to intimidate the reporter. They sent a guy with a gun.

Any government or corporate agent coming to a home is a form of class warfare. CEOs and the 1% tend to live in secured compounds, or just a place with high walls and gates, and nobody can get peaceful access without prior permission. Because bureaucrats should treat everyone the same, they need to make appointments to avoid class warfare accusations.

It makes me wonder if a Capt. or Lt. turned the Mayor down -- kind of like Nixon was turned down twice before toady Bork fired Cox and effectively ended his own career.

sees something he doesn't like, and within minutes, has a uniform (with a gun) WAKE the author from a dead sleep to ask him to rewrite it?

You can't make this shit up.

I don't feel too bad now working for the Berkeley Parks Dept. and planting redwood trees where they should not be. I figure about 25 to 30 more years before they are a really big problem.

I guess redwood trees are OK, but we can change reporters minds.
