Comic book artist Moebius dies
Source: AFP
French comic-book artist and designer Jean Giraud, known as Moebius, died Saturday aged 74 after a long illness, an associate and work colleague said. Jean Henri Gaston Giraud was one of France's leading cartoonists who also found fame in Japan and the United States.
Born at Nogent-sur-Marne east of Paris on May 8, 1938, he began after art school training as an illustrator for advertisers and the fashion industry before turning to comic strips.
He found fame when he created the Lieutenant Blueberry western character and adopted the pseudonym Moebius for illustrations of science fiction books and magazines.
As well as being published in top French magazines, he worked with Japanese manga artists and co-produced an adventure of US comic-book superhero The Silver Surfer with Stan Lee.
---
'He also worked on design concepts and storyboards for a number of top science fiction films, including Alien, Tron, The Abyss and The Fifth Element.'

I had dinner with him once. He told me that his biggest worry about moving to the U.S. was leaving his UFO seeking friends in France. But luckily, he hooked up with a group of Native Americans in the Southwest, who practiced the same activities.
He was an interesting and wildly talented Frenchman.

They were visionary, incredibly realistic trips into a future containing visually beautiful but often shocking political messages.
Through his work, the man enabled us to see the worlds of what might be.
We are most fortunate, indeed.

Hugely influential among other creatives. Like Neil Gaiman, his post on Moebius linked above, Ridley Scott, Luc Besson (take a look at this work and see how much was spawned from Moebius' visions: http://www.sci-fi-o-rama.com/2008/09/30/mobieus-the-long-tomorrow/ ) to name just a very few.
Thanks for posting this, Onehandle.
RIP Moebius.

The detail of his art is phenomenal! His style also has that European-comic look to it. "Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot" is one of his early comics and worth seeking out
I'll miss Mobius as well. I was introduced to him through Heavy Metal magazine, and bought many subsequent TPB collections. Such a great influence on comics, movies, and animation.

(5,352 posts)called Hard Boiled with Frank Miller. I've never seen such detailed art, and it looks amazing. (Shame about Miller, though. He's really gone off the deep end, politics-wise, these last several years.)

(29,414 posts)I couldn't remember the name of that comic. I only recalled that the main character was a "Tax Man", but won't spoil it for those that haven't read the comic.
What surprised me from the wiki entry was that Darrow had worked with Moebius, and considers him one of four artistic influences
Didn't know that about Miller. I haven't read his stuff (or any comics) in a long time.
I'll have to go and see what Comics Journal has to say about Moebius...

(29,414 posts)with the segment "Taarna". In a thread over in The Lounge, someone had brought up the subject of "The Star Wars Christmas Special" and posted the cartoon portion. As soon as I saw one of the characters, I noted how he looked like one of the elders in Taarna. If you look at other details, you can see his influence on the backgrounds as well as the way the characters are realized.
And, he worked with Syd Mead on Tron. That was just on this morning, so I had to stop and watch. Syd Mead's style certainly shows in the design of the lightcycles.
