GOP weighs undo of vets pension cuts as debt price

Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republican leaders are weighing a plan to reverse a recently passed cut to military pensions as the price for increasing the government’s borrowing cap.

According to congressional aides, GOP leaders plan to float the idea to rank-and-file Republicans at a meeting in the Capitol on Monday evening. The aides spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to be identified by name discussing strategy.

It’s not clear that the plan will fly with Democrats. Democrats’ votes would be needed to help pass the measure since some Republicans refuse to vote to raise the so-called debt ceiling under any circumstances.

The cuts to cost-of-living pension increases for military retirees under the age of 62 were part of December’s budget agreement. They have sparked an uproar among advocates for veterans.

We already know that the Republicans haven't done much for veterans, recently! This is just Boehner tossing out some crumbs to avoid having the Republicans getting blame for not increasing the debt limit.

Besides, it's just another political tactic to try and keep control of the House!

...with Republicans and voting to do this, Democrats can demonstrate that they're not partisan, obstructionists like the repubs have developed a reputation for. Great opportunity to show that Democrats are reasonable and that they care about vets (which, of course, they already do--even though the Republicans like to think of themselves as the preferred party of military personnel).

It establishes that debt ceiling limits can have a price attached to them. Expect the tactic to be used again and again.

10. Do a stand alone bill but do not tie ANYTHING to debt ceiling.

Democrats had better stand strong on this and not allow ANYTHING to be tied to a raise in the Debt Ceiling. Restoring the pension cuts for our veterans is important but should be on it's own merits and not by extortion.

it was Republicans who took away (cut) our Vets 'cost of living increase' on their pensions. It would be a psych if the house quickly approved to raise the debt with only the Vets cut reversed. Then President Obama signed. win win

11. Wasn't it the Republicans who insisted on the pension cuts in the first place?

They wanted to cut entitlements spending and proposed a benefits cut as a way to do that, along with several other reductions in important safety net programs. Now they are simply reacting to public outrage, and trying to take credit for restoring the cuts they initially demanded in the budget negotiations.

13. So, How Are Republicans Going To Pay For This?

Keep in mind that these benefits are going to people too young to retire with full benefits in the civilian population. My last boss was a retired Sergeant-Major drawing a full military retirement benefit while also pulling down $125,000 a year at his civilian job. Ending unemployment benefits are far more hurtful than a small reduction in cost of living increases for people like my former boss. In 3 years when he reaches 62 he will get his full, normal retirement -- as he should. Cutting back slightly during his double-dip years seems fair given some of the other decisions on food stamps and long term unemployment benefits that were also part of the budget agreement.
