Saudis Agree to Provide Syrian Rebels With Mobile Antiaircraft Missiles

Source: Wall Street Journal

Washington's Arab allies, disappointed with Syria peace talks, have agreed to provide rebels there with more sophisticated weaponry, including shoulder-fired missiles that can take down jets, according to Western and Arab diplomats and opposition figures.

Saudi Arabia has offered to give the opposition for the first time Chinese man-portable air defense systems, or Manpads, and antitank guided missiles from Russia, according to an Arab diplomat and several opposition figures with knowledge of the efforts. Saudi officials couldn't be reached to comment.

The U.S. has long opposed arming rebels with antiaircraft missiles for fear they could fall into the hands of extremists who might use them against the West or commercial airlines. The Saudis have held off supplying them in the past because of U.S. opposition. A senior Obama administration official said Friday that the U.S. objection remains the same. "There hasn't been a change internally on our view," the official said.

The U.S. for its part has stepped up financial support, handing over millions of dollars in new aid to pay fighters' salaries, said rebel commanders who received some of the money. The U.S. wouldn't comment on any payments.

to Russians arming Saudi rebels who want to overthrow the Wahabi jihad/sharia royal family.

Russians reduce competition from another oil supplier, snatch a client state from the US and make it their own while oil prices rise and they get their money back.

We should never have been in bed with the corrupt and brutal Saudi royal family.

The medieval Saudi Royal family (America's favorite divine right rulers) have decided to up the chances of further conflict, suffering and death in Syria by supplying a crowd of fanatic, jihad-loving murderers with sophisticated anti-aircraft weapons, ones which can be easily hidden, transported and deployed.

It makes me wish even more that the "Arab Spring" had gotten to Riyadh before fizzling out.

I know bush was all chummy with them and the Bin Laden family, but the Saudis seem to have a nice way of facilitating terrorist.

15 of the 19 terrorist who perpetrated the September 11th attacks were Saudi. In fact, all of the major terrorist attacks against the US since the 90's have been perpetrated by groups that were mostly Saudi.

At least they aren't given the rebels American made items, but it is only a matter of time before these weapons are used against us.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Light arms supplied by the United States are flowing to "moderate" Syrian rebel factions in the south of the country and U.S. funding for months of further deliveries has been approved by Congress, according U.S. and European security officials.

The weapons, most of which are moving to non-Islamist Syrian rebels via Jordan, include a variety of small arms, as well as some more powerful weapons, such as anti-tank rockets.

His helicopter "barrel bombs", jet missiles and ground artillery are far from smart weapons and undoubtedly kill more civilians than fighters, but at least they only kill people in Syria. Anti-aircraft missiles may neutralize Assad's air superiority, as they did in Afghanistan against the Soviets, but the 'blow back' will be terrible which makes this a foolish strategy. No matter how frustrated they are with their inability to defend against indiscriminate attacks from the air, giving them anti-aircraft missiles is a 'solution' that is worse than the problem.

If there were "rebels" in America attempting to overthrow the government and another nation provided missiles to them, what would America say?

A little "walk in their moccasins" can be helpful for clear thinking.

Let's hope they aren't SA-24 clones..

"The SA-24 in the hands of terrorists could bring down helicopters and airliners taking off. The SA-24 is a heat seeker, but it does not just go for the engine exhaust but rather any part of the aircraft. This makes the SA-24 more dangerous because if they just go for the engine exhaust these missiles often do little damage.
Against jet fighters or large transports with powerful engines, the missiles that just home in on heat cause some damage to the tailpipe but usually fail to bring down the jet. This was first noted during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, where the Egyptians fired hundreds of SA-7s at Israeli A-4 light bombers. Most of the A-4s, with their 11,187 pounds of thrust engines, survived the encounter. Larger jets, like the F-4 and its 17,000 pound thrust engines, were even more difficult to bring down when only the engine exhaust was targeted. Smaller commercial jets, like the 737 or DC-9 (each using two 14,000 pounds of thrust engines) have proved vulnerable. But a 757 has much larger engines, with 43,000 pounds of thrust and the 747 is 63,000. Moreover, the rear ends of jet engines are built to take a lot of punishment from all that hot exhaust spewing out. Put a bird into the front of the engine and you can do some real damage. But these older missiles homed in on heat and all of that is at the rear end of the engine. Since the 1970s, about 40 commercial aircraft have been brought down by Russian portable anti-aircraft missiles (usually older SA-7s), killing over 500 people. But more recent MANPADs designs that go for any part of the aircraft have not seen much action.
The terrorists, some of them at least, are aware of these limitations and use their missiles only against helicopters or small aircraft. The frequent failures against larger aircraft has received a lot of publicity, and even the al Qaeda trainers and field commanders must be aware of it by now."
