McConnell opponent Bevin suggests gay marriage could lead to parents marrying children
Source: Washington Post
Senate contender Matt Bevin (R) of Kentucky suggested Thursday that gay marriage could open the door to allowing parents to marry their children.
"If it's alright to have same-sex marriages, why not define a marriage -- because at the end of the day a lot of this ends up being taxes and who can visit who in the hospital and there's other repercussions and things that come with this -- so a person may want to define themselves as being married to one of their children so that they could then in fact pass on certain things to that child financially and otherwise? Where do you draw the line? And if in fact a person can arbitrarily draw it here, why not could someone else draw it arbitrarily draw it somewhere else?" Bevin said on The Janet Mefrerd Show. Bevin's remarks were flagged by the liberal Right Wing Watch Web site.
Bevin is challenging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). So far, his campaign has gained little traction against the Senate's top-ranking Republican.
In the interview, Bevin reiterated his opposition to gay marriage and said the issue should be left up to the states, not the federal government.

(3,596 posts)Men will want to marry their dogs. Women will want to marry their cats or horses. If same-gender marriage why not polygamy?
People that make these claims know they are without any merit.
Marriage is a legal contract. Dogs, cats, horses and CHILDREN lack the legal power to enter into these contracts. I have seen no one advocating for man-dog, woman-goat or adult-child marriages.
Personally I would not have a problem with polygamy. As long as these are competent adults who, of their own free will, choose to enter into a polygamous relationship I have no problem as a theoretical matter. The reality, of course, is polygamy is practiced in this country primarily among very cultish communities where polygamy is a forced way of life with young women, even girls, being forced into these marriages with cultish brutes. This leaves the "lost boys" to leave the community.
So I am not advocating polygamy in this country because its practice has been shown to be potentially harmful to the women in the relationship, girls brought into these relationships and the impact on young men in the community.
Children lack legal standing to enter into a marriage. Some states allow marriage, without parental consent, as young as 16. But that practice is viewed as a traditional marriage between individuals of "competent" legal age. I would question whether most boys and girls at 16 are competent to enter a marriage.

(13,921 posts)Why not? If you separate the cultural implications of marriage from the legal agreement, I see no reason that two persons, regardless of their particular nature of relationship, shouldn't be able to agree to live together, care for each other, share financial burdens, help each other with raising children, etc, and get the legal and tax benefits of having that kind of agreement. Be that a husband and wife, a husband and husband, asexual best friends, a parent and adult offspring, etc.

(16,149 posts)the STAND YOUR GROUND law against gay taxpaying American citizens.
The bill provides legal protection for the haters/bigots to deny public services to suspected gay persons in housing, lending, education, social services, health, EMS/fire/police, Courts and law, as long as the hater/bigot utters the magic phrase: "My religion says I don't have to provide service to you."
Really, this law seeks to transform secular/democratic law into rightwing "Biblical law."
And straight people, women, and racial minorities, the "God botherers" will be coming for YOU ALL next... You betcha!
