Disney ends funding to Boy Scouts over gay policy

Source: Detroit News via AP

The Walt Disney Company will cut funding to the Boy Scouts of America beginning in 2015 because of a policy that bans gay adult leaders in the organization.

Deron Smith, a Boy Scouts spokesman, said in a statement Sunday that the decision will affect the organization’s ability to serve children.

Disney does not provide direct funding to the Boy Scouts, but it donates money to some troops in exchange for volunteer hours completed by Disney employees. . .

without money there is no Boy Scouts so there ends that option. Dumb!! Whats the point. Everyone likes things to happen NOW. Things don't always change overnight. Boy Scouts will turn into Acorn. Defunded and bankrupt

This is a problem at the administrative level which has strong ties to conservative religious groups. The pressure to change is coming from the bottom up. It may sound heartless that Disney is cutting funding to local councils but this will do more to shake things up at the top than cutting funding to the national organization. This will all get straightened out in the next couple years.

I was a Scout and both my sons are scouts. We get all of our money from fund raising and dues. The local council does not support the Troops or Packs at all. There are a lot of life experiences learned in scouting and I want my children to be prepared as adults. The Scouts have already voted to allow gay scouts and one day leaders who are gay will be able to openly serve as well. what you don't understand is that most troops or packs are sponsored by a church and many of the conservative churches pulled their sponsorships over the decision to admit gay scouts. The only people that hurts is the scouts. I know a lot of good liberal democrats who were scouts or who are now involved as adults and some of the comments here are really disturbing. As for the comments about Walt Disney, what did you expect. The man was born at the beginning of the 20th century when those attitudes were very common. Look at at Ford, Limburgh, Prescott Bush and even many democratic leaders of that era. Walt Disney has been dead since 1967 and his prejudices have no bearing on the company that bears his name today.

Just what the libertarians want us all to believe. And just like it spoke about AZ Senate bill 1062.

There's no way that anybody can defend LGBT discrimination. That dog don't hunt any longer.

there was a big showdown a few years ago------theatrical workers in Disney have many LBGT---Disney risked a strike by them and got on board------one Christian group banned its membership from attending ----that didn't work either

Walt was a tried-and-true freeper teabagger. . .racist, anti-Semitic, Homophobic and union-busting.

But I still like Donald Duck cartoons, especially "Der Fuhrer's Face," which is just amazing.

On one hand, you've got this new "Trail Life" organization, which is Just Like The Scouts But Without Any Gays, recruiting people because the Scouts have gays now...

and on the other hand, you've got Disney pulling their funding for the Scouts because they don't have gays in leadership roles.

Funny thing about Trail Life, tho...they've been in business for just a couple of months, and already they claim to be "the premier organization for Christian Boys."

Lesbians aren't as threatening to Real Christians as gay men are, so I don't know if there's a "Christian" version of the Girl Scouts.

Does this mean that a lot of Christian churches -- perhaps especially the Catholic churches -- are going to stop sponsoring Girls Scout troops?

What a Conservative hears with this;

No matter how much they try to satisfy the LGBT community. It will never be enough, the goalposts will always be moved.

I don't like the current arrangement BSA has with regard LGBT leaders, but this really is an awkward time to make a stand. Too soon after what for BSA was a very large step.

I hope other BSA corporate sponsors follow Disney's lead. The effort should be to bleed BSA dry of every pool of funding it has available to it. Until boys and leaders are allowed to join BSA freely, without regard to their sexual orientation or religious disposition, than Scouting does not truly represent the American values it holds so dear.
