U.S. activist, CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin says Egypt police have broken her arm in jail

LONDON -- American rights and peace activist Medea Benjamin said Tuesday that Egyptian police were holding her at an airport jail without explanation and that they had broken her arm.
"Help. They broke my arm. Egypt police," Benjamin, who co-founded the CODEPINK anti-war group, said on Twitter.
She said she was detained upon arrival in Cairo, where she was meant to join a delegation and then travel to for the Palestinian territory of Gaza for a women's conference.
Benjamin tweeted earlier that the jail cell was cold, the food given to her consisted of "dirty stale bread and dirty water," and that the guards refused to allow another woman in the cell to see a doctor despite the fact that she ill and "moaning all night."
Egypt's government has cracked down harshly in recent years on opposition members, arresting dozens of supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi. Several international journalists have also been arrested and held on terror accusations for merely speaking to members of Morsi's now-banned Muslim Brotherhood.

(13,616 posts)This should not be done to any human being, period.
On the other hand, there is a part of me that wonders if Benjamin realizes that the people who she is supporting feel a right to treat women like crap. No, that is NOT a slam on the whole of Islam, but those who claim to be speaking for the whole of the religion, even though it is very unlikely that the Prophet, peace be upon him, would approve of this at all.

(13,616 posts)She has to realize they are getting a boost from her support, which will hide the fact that one of the first things they will do when in power is oppress women.

Chasm.
There are people thinking "GOOD!"
Republicans, by any other name.

(13,616 posts)Please, the last thing I want is for Morsi to succeed, because the GOP will only use his success to say "see, dis is why you gots ta listen to us, coz if we ain't controlling da mid eest, dey will put people like dis in powah!" The martyrdom of idiots would only help him, so frankly I want Miss Benjamin back home eating whatever expensive upper middle class vanity food she eats.
Miss Benjamin has no problem empowering people who would hang her, the way she sent that Valnetine to Ron Paul, who also happens to be one of the major voices against abortion rights. But Medea knows all she has to do is wave her pink wand, and all those mean nasty types she supported will play nice (sarcasm of course.)
And no, I am not thinking "Good"; if nothing else, the last thing we need is for Ms. Benjamin to become a martyr, because martyrs are anointed with an aura that prevents criticism. I do not want her dead or in jail, I want her back home and revealed to be a charlatan at worst, fool at best.

(6,045 posts)I have questioned her "logic" before...But I do have to say she has HUGE BALLS! I would not be brave enough to go Egypt as an American right now let alone go there and draw attention to yourself & get arrested! Fine line between bravery & stupidity...I think this falls on the stupidity side especially due to the point you brought up about her supporting a group who thinks she is nothing but a baby maker & servant and what exactly she hoped to accomplish over there is beyond me!?! Oh well, I hope she gets the proper medical treatment for that arm & a safe return to the USA.

(4,185 posts)She was just interviewed on Democracy Now.
She is in Turkey now in the hospital at the airport. She was in Egypt airport from 8PM until 11AM and during that time was refused treatment for fractures and dislocated shoulder after 5 men beat her and handcuffed her, and the Embassy was informed right off the bat by Code Pink, but in those 15 hours she was in Egypt they never showed up to help. So the information in the article is wrong.

(4,185 posts)Fortunately there was Good Samaritan doctor on the flight to Turkey where Egypt apparently put her on a plane to. The doctor relocated her shoulder and gave her a shot, which helped temporarily, but she is still in severe pain
The purpose of her trip was a women's conference focusing on women's dire and desperate situation trapped in Gaza by Egypt on one side Israel on the other. She is the one who organized the conference, but she won't be there. Instead, she comes back to U.S. with broken arm.

(27,461 posts)it now reads:
U.S. Embassy spoeksperson Mofid Deak confirmed to CBS News' Alex Ortiz that Benjamin had left the country after the embassy provided consular assistance. However, CODEPINK's Alli McCracken told CBS News that the U.S. embassy in Egypt did not help Benjamin.

Terrible to hear she was treated so horrifically -- not a good indication of what is happening in Egypt.

(11,297 posts)Holy reading fucking comprehension.
She was detained and re-routed from going to a women's conference in Gaza.
This isn't about Egypt -- it is about keeping her from the Gaza Strip.
Hell Hath No Fury
(16,327 posts)It was the Egyptian police who detained and hurt her, so yeah, it IS -- at least paritally -- about Egypt. Why would they detain her? On whose orders? Why did they decide to rough her up?
