Turkey scrambles jets after Russian plane flies near its Black Sea coast

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - The Turkish Air Force scrambled eight F-16 fighter jets after a Russian surveillance plane flew parallel along its Black Sea coast, the military said on Tuesday, amid increased tensions between Russia and the West over Ukraine.

The incident occurred on Monday and the Russian plane remained in international airspace, according to a statement on the website of the military General Staff.

Ukraine's Crimea peninsula, which juts into the north of the Black Sea, is at the centre of the current standoff between Russia and Ukraine's new pro-Western government. NATO member Turkey forms the southern coastline of the Black Sea.

U.S. Warship Runs Aground in Black Sea

One of the U.S. Navy ships in the Black Sea that was supposed to be available to respond to an emergency in Sochi has been out of commission for nearly a week, a senior U.S. military official told NBC News.

The U.S.S. Taylor — a guided-missile frigate deployed to the Black Sea amid concerns about terror threats at the Winter Games — ran aground as it was pulling into port in Turkey last week, the official said.

US transit hub in Romania fully operational

MK AIR BASE, Romania — A temporary U.S. base in Romania that will serve as the primary hub for American forces leaving Afghanistan officially reached its full operating capacity Friday.

Since Feb. 2, some 6,000 American servicemembers have transited through the center at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, located about 25 miles northwest of the Black Sea city of Constanta and about 2,500 miles northwest of Afghanistan.
...
The U.S. had already constructed 85 buildings capable of supporting roughly 1,500 personnel at Mihail Kogalniceanu – or MK Air Base – for previous missions, O’Connor said.

Beginning in late December, elements of the 21st expanded the infrastructure to accommodate up to 2,000 transiting troops and 400 military personnel who run the operation.

8 planes for one Russian spy flight?

Overreact much?

Meanwhile Syria is boiling just to Turkey's south. I wonder how many weapons Turkey is pouring into Syria? And wasn't it Putin that threw water on the US bombing Syria? That pissed off Israel, I would venture, eh?

their number one tourism partner. The Western media is as close to ridiculous as one can get these days. Why is this even a "news" story? Oh right I forgot. Everything is about ratcheting up tension. One has to be a complete idiot to be played by "our" media these days. Russian propaganda has some serious competition in the West.

You may choose not to but for those of us who hunger for information, the more and the more varied the sources of information the better.

Most American media is only concerned about the Oscars and the next Stand Your Ground trial.

which use phrases like "tightening their vice like grip" and others. In general I agree with you. American media is designed for emotional impact and generating revenue and not much else. It has an anti-Russia bias and lack of understanding that is simplistic and over-reactionary. Of course it did take a decade to build up the Putin bogeyman. The MIC needed that new Cold war as terrorism has definitely run it's course in the public eye. Ya can't get any more blood(dollars) from that stone. On the other hand, The Nation is one US media source that seems to be based in reality.

It's definitely hard to find reasoned synopsis in the USA these days. The Nation is definitely ahead of the curve on this one.

They want a war. It will be up to the people to tell them to stick their war where the sun don't shine.
