Ukraine crisis: Chinese president Xi Jinping urges US to show restraint

Source: Guardian

Chinese president Xi Jinping has urged a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine and for all parties to exercise calm and restraint, during separate telephone calls with US president Barack Obama and German chancellor Angela Merkel.

“The situation in Ukraine is extremely complex, and what is most urgent is for all sides to remain calm and exercise restraint to avoid an escalation in tensions,” China’s foreign ministry on Monday cited Xi as telling Obama.

“Political and diplomatic routes must be used to resolve the crisis,” Xi added.

China has an “open attitude” towards any suggestions or proposals which can ameliorate the situation, and is willing to remain in touch with all parties including the United States, he said.

Is it just me, or does that qualification seem to suggest a hint of implied criticism for our "Russia has invaded Ukraine!" approach to recent events?

No, they didn't even have to. Russia has a treaty with Ukraine which allows for Russian troops to be in Crimea, until 2042. Perhaps they reinforced those Russian troops already in Crimea, but they definitely did not invade.

Even though we are not particularly relevant to the issues. Which is wise.

Preventing a war between West and East (even a trade war) is everyone's business.

Tell me if any other NATO country is blustering as much as we are. This should not be the US but NATO.

This is not a war we will win and not a war we should even attempt.

We have enough insane people in our government that would love to nuke Russia and it would also come back to us!

This is like children playing at war but the stakes would destroy all of us.

We need not behave like über hypocrites and go into the usual American exceptionalism mode. We need to stand down.

It sucks that we are supporting a bunch of neonazis and fascists to boot.
