Apel arrested during afternoon protest at Vandenberg

A week after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that military commanders can decide who can be on their installations, activist Dennis Apel and another protester were arrested again for trespassing at Vandenberg Air Force Base.
Apel of Santa Maria and another longtime activist, Father Steve Kelly from the Bay Area, were detained by security forces members shortly after the protest began in front of Vandenberg on Wednesday afternoon.

This ruling is dangerous, dangerous for our freedom of speech, it is dangerous for our obligation to hold our government accountable, and it is another step in the erosion of the constitutionally guaranteed rights which were put in place to secure our liberty, Apel said.

But Apel has challenged the ban and bar letter issued to anyone arrested at the base, contending he cant be stopped from being on the grassy area designated for legal protests and located alongside a public highway.

The highway in front of the gate is patrolled by Air Force MPs

(6,045 posts)I was stationed at VAFB in the early 90's for 3yrs...That is one beautiful AF base!! The base has miles of coastline that the public has not had access to in nearly 100yrs & I would spend entire weekends by myself out on the coast camping in a tent fishing, crabbing & hiking. The seals would come right up to me when I would fish from the rocks & some would sleep just feet from me while I fished. I loved that place!!
Yes, the front gate is like miles inside AF property. It has been so long but I think you enter AF Property not to far south of Santa Maria & it ends just north of Lompoc...Correct me if I am wrong but that is the way I remember it. I know I got a speeding ticket by the AFSP coming back to the dorms from Santa Maria & I was much closer to Santa Maria than the front gate of the base.
