ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) A trial has started in federal court on whether a New Mexico city can have a monument inscribed with the Ten Commandments on the lawn in front of Bloomfield City Hall.
The lawsuit contends the 6-foot-tall granite monument violates the religious freedoms of residents by conveying a message that the city endorses a particular religious belief.
The trial before Senior U.S. District Judge James A. Parker began Monday, the Albuquerque Journal (http://bit.ly/1ctGnd2 ) reported.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed the suit on behalf of two Bloomfield residents who practice the Wiccan religion
"In my opinion, it says that anybody who doesn't agree with this monument on city grounds is an outsider," plaintiff Jane Felix testified. "It has no place on City Hall property."

(2,205 posts)Beside a Christmas tree and creche sits a large banner with a nativity scene in which baby Jesus has been replaced by a plate of spaghetti with googly eyes. A crowd that includes pirates and gnomes surrounds Jesus. At the bottom its message reads Touched by an Angelhair. The scene is the work of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monsters.
Near the courthouse fence is another display whose sign reads Greetings From Your Friendly Local Atheists. Its message is about celebrating the Constitution and honoring the separation of church and state.
Elsewhere on the lawn, a skeleton in a Santa suit hangs on a cross. This has all become part of a battle that has many outraged.
People are just horrified by this. Its just created a lot of division, a lot of angst and a lot of people are upset, Kenneth Reid, Loudoun County supervisor-elect for the Leesburg district, told ABCNews.com.

(11,362 posts)... or even, maybe just the first one, say they are not endorsing a specific religion.
How do you get from "I am the lord your God: you should have no other gods", to "this isn't about any particular religion"?

I'd almost think it's a conspiracy...one of those strengthen the base things. In Indiana we had an issue with some "christians" who wanted a christian message on a plaque that was installed in a room they endowed -- in a science building.
Initial response was to deny it. But there was such an outcry of persecution and denial of the 1st amendment rights that the university approved it.
Then again, Mitch Daniels runs the place.
On second thought...I don't think it's a conspiracy, I know it.
So how come our federal Attorney General isn't getting involved in these cases? Doesn't he take an oath to uphold th constitution against ALL enemies, foreign AND domestic? Aren't these people enemies of the constitution? Or at last get it to the supreme court to define what a enemy is?
Hmm?
(added) What happens if a state is an enemy of the constitution? I seem to remember a war about that -- you know, state's rights...
IIRC, the 10 commands isn't Xtian rule. It's the old testament. The new one(Jesus) states that the 10 commands are irrelevant.
