Rick Perry: Focus On Equal Pay In Texas Guv Race Is 'Nonsense'

Source: TPM

CATHERINE THOMPSON – MARCH 25, 2014, 9:32 AM EDT

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) said Tuesday that the focus on equal pay in the race to succeed him as governor is "nonsense," since he said laws addressing the issue were already on the books.

State Sen. Wendy Davis, the Democratic candidate, has hammered her opponent, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott (R), for claiming that existing law is enough to protect a woman's right to equal pay. Davis had also sponsored a state version of the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act that Perry vetoed last year.

Appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Perry said he understood Davis' message, but asked "Why do we need to muddle up our statutes when we already have laws on the book that clearly take care of this?"

"I support and help lift up women in the state of Texas as do I think our policies in the state," he said. "But for the sole purpose of politics -- and let's face it, this was passed for no other reason than to say we're going to make you veto this bill."

If so-called Governor Perry hasn't vetoed Wendy Davis' pay equal bill, this issue would be nonsense for real! Perry is the one who made it happening for both sides of the campaign and he surely isn't interested in women's rights to equal pay. He is all for rich white men controlling the world.

6. Current Laws "Clearly Take Care Of This"?

Then why do women continue to make 70% of what men make for doing the same work. Those laws obviously don't have the teeth necessary to take care of the problem and that is why equal pay remains a political issue to be addressed and that is why it has traction in the Texas election -- as acknowledged by Perry's leap into the fray here.

11. Are those the same "laws on the books" that the GOP typically wants to tear into little pieces

or fray at the edges, or defund, or refuse to enforce, or the ones they rail against because they hate regulations 'cause they just gotta have their freedom-freedom? Those laws?

And if there ARE such "laws on the books," WHY do we still have this problem that those "laws on the books" are presumably designed to address?

9. If there are still two pay scales

one for women and one for men, then the law isn't enough. There should be NO reason women should have to sue an employer for equal pay, it should be a law that it just is equal.

10. The reason that this bill needs to be passed has to do with the statute of limitations.

Current state law requires disparate pay claims to be made within 180 days after the discrimination began, whereas the federal Lilly Ledbetter Act allows such claims to be filed when discrimination is discovered.

This means that most cases have to be filed in federal court in order for a recovery to occur.

13. Juanita Jean tore into Gov. Goodhair

Juanita Jean really had fun with Goodhair http://www.juanitajean.com/2014/03/25/oh-yall-rick-perry-again/

Rick Perry is now calling pay equality “nonsense.” And he knows that for two reasons: (1) there are already laws on the books to protect women from discrimination but he’s not real sure what they are, and (2) he appointed a female Secretary of State.

“They have my support, as do all women across — my chief of staff is a woman,” he said. “I mean, I probably got more female chiefs of staff than anybody in Texas history.”

And exactly what he means by “got”, I dunno.

Having Rick Perry run for President is like putting six pots on a four burner stove. He just ain’t got enough smarts to handle many pans.

I guess Ole Rick hadn’t head that the Republican wanting to live in the Guv Shack next has some gender pay problems.

Meanwhile, the San Antonio Express-News was compiling salary figures from the Texas attorney general’s office. The newspaper reported Wednesday that female assistant attorneys general make less on average than do men in the same position under Abbott.

The average salary for the 343 male assistant attorneys general in Abbott’s office is $79,464, the Express-News found, while the average salary for 379 women is $73,649.

Perry says there are other things we folks in Texas should be worried about:

“If they want to talk about substantive issues in Texas in this governor’s race, let’s talk about tax policy, regulatory policy, legal policies,” he said.

Cue the Hallelujah Chorus. He remembered three things! However, I think he just made up that legal policy thing because Lord knows, Rick Perry ain’t lined up straight with the statutes. Plus, I have no idea what legal policies means. He just made that up because he forgot the third thing, didn’t he? Oh well, pack up the Hallelujah Chorus and turn out the lights.

So, Rick wants us to talk about tax and regulatory policy, huh? You know, men things. How ’bout this? Rick wants to pay women less so he can tax us less and he wants to regulate what we do with our bodies. You’re on, big boy. I’m hittin’ the ground runnin’ on that one.
