Site selling racist Obama stickers shut down

Source: WFAA.com

One day after News 8 reported a web site selling racist bumper stickers about President Obama, the site has disappeared.

It was in part because of the efforts of two men who work in the same office, and stay in touch on Facebook.

Matt Houston and Ben Goerz office next to each other at the same company. Thursday, they didn't even see each other. But they teamed up on Facebook to put a dent in racism.

Matt spotted a Facebook page for "Stumpy's Stickers" and saw its racist bumper stickers using the 'N-word' in connection with President Obama. He posted a comment on Facebook.

I found about these sticker by way of this thread on DU: http://www.democraticunderground.com/125122521

A quick Google search and I found the story.

The good news is that this shows the power of social media and human decency. The bad news is that I thought these sort this sort of hate was a thing of the past but learned otherwise. Still, good people made some progress against the evil of racism, albeit in a small way.

Here the url for the Google cache of the website that was shut down:

"thought this hate was an issue of the past'. These last couple of months have my head spinning with issues we thought were settled years ago. But I am glad to see it only took one day to stop these guys.
Compare those racist, disgusting and crude teaparty protests and town halls with the protests in Wisconsin, for example, and we see who the good guys are.

Not all republicans are racists, but all racists are republican.

Judge Eric Moye, who has an impressive bio, brought the bumper stickers to the public's attention
http://www.dallascounty.org/department/courts/civildistrictcourts/14th/bio.php

Belows is part of the story quoting Judge Moye from WFAA.com that alerted others to these racist bumperstickers:

It's one thing to use a racial slur under the anonymity of the Internet. It's another to put it on your bumper.

But both are cropping up in North Texas, in material opposing President Obama's re-election. Bumper stickers for sale on the Internet play on Obama's race.

One uses a confederate flag, emblazoned with the phrase "Don't Re-[a shortened version of the 'N-word'] in 2012." Another uses the same phrase and a caricature of the President. A third uses the Obama campaign symbol with the phrase.

"I think they work on some ignorant people," said Dallas Democratic judge Eric Moye. "I think they're calculated to play to the most base fears that people have. And I don't think it's unintentional - it's as coordinated as the use of the SuperPacs."

Racist Bumper Sticker Targets Obama, Shocks Community

Now that we are in the campaign season, many slap on bumper stickers to show support for their candidate. But, there’s a bumper sticker out there now attacking President Obama that even Republicans won’t put on their vehicle.

The bumper sticker says “Don’t Re-Nig in 2012,” and underneath it reads “Stop repeat offender. Don’t re-elect Obama!” This bumper sticker went viral Thursday. It is all over the internet and soon it could be seen on cars across the country. It’s political play on words takes the word renege and misspells it to the point, it’s unmistakably racist.

Government intervention is not necessary in this, nor was any government present.

This was a business decision by these people's Web Hosting service. They were in violation of the service agreement. They were shut down.

There is nothing stopping them from hosting their site with someone who is willing to provide them drive space and bandwidth.

Political persuasion has nothing to do with the First Amendment. Neither does this issue. Neither does Rush, etc. The First Amendment has to do with governmental powers, not what a service agreement between a service provider and a racist fucknut can contain.

Presumably Stumpy's sticker can find another place to host his racist site, as numerous other racist sites are online. Likewise, there are other ways to arrange payment besides PayPal.

Here's the real story: guy who understand a few basic things about technology is able to shut down a racist website by complaining to Paypal and the website's host.

The fact that he saw the site referenced on a friend's facebook has nothing at all to do with it. How did the facebook poster find out about the site? Is there a story there? Maybe someone called on the phone and told him about it. Inquiring minds must know! Maybe there's a whole cell phone technology angle here!

The price is $3. Ms. Smith insisted that the bumper sticker is not racist. I asked her about the “N” word, for which “nig” is the shortened version. “According to the dictionary [the N word] does not mean black. It means a low down, lazy, sorry, low down person. That’s what the N word means.”

In Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary, the word is defined as “member of any dark skinned race. Taken to be offensive.” Dictionary.com says the word “is now probably the most offensive word in English. Its degree of offensiveness has increased markedly in recent years, although it has been used in a derogatory manner since at least the Revolutionary War. Definitions 1a, 1b, and 2 represent meanings that are deeply disparaging and are used when the speaker deliberately wishes to cause great offense.”

She seems to be an example of willful ignorance.
