Police fire pepper spray at students after game [Univ. of Arizona]

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) Tucson police said Saturday night that they shot pepper spray at several hundred fans who took to the streets and threw beer bottles and firecrackers at officers after the University of Arizona basketball team's overtime loss in the NCAA tournament.
There were no immediate reports of injuries to fans or officers, but nine to 10 people were arrested for offenses such as disorderly conduct and unruly gathering, Tucson police Sgt. Pete Dugan said. He said those advancing on officers were arrested. The street has been cleared and secured and there are only stragglers remaining on side streets.
Dugan said crowds leaving bars and restaurants near campus after the game filled University Boulevard and wouldn't leave despite urging through a PA system and social media declaring it an unlawful assembly.
Police brought in cruisers and a unit of officers with batons, helmets and face masks to block the street when people started tossing beer bottles, cans and firecrackers, hitting police vehicles and endangering officers.

(5,668 posts)although can't remember what sparked the LaCrosse WI riot in 91 or 92. Just remember a couple of fellow students coming in with the reddest possible eyes. smh oddly enough some of it ended up on Unsolved Mysteries. the guy who torched the car. Even more odd.. The day we had our visit to the courthouse in LaCrosse for high school the room I visited was so packed we were like waiting out the door. Little known to me thats also the same door the perp would have to walk out thru. so our shirts brushed O_O
I wasn't really scared but I couldn't back up either because people were behind me. Wonder how that guy is doing now. Being a teen and black in LaCrosse times changing. but even back then my Racism site died in early 1986 when I was just 10 1/2 But I've written on this before
they tend to be labeled the coon creek riots though and 20 some years later they still happen

(23,340 posts)so yeah, there will be clashes.
Win or lose, it's a good bet there will be rioting in Lansing, MI. soon.
It's become customary.

(23,340 posts)Mich State's run is over, and no riots happened. That's the bad news, and the good.
There's always next year.

(8,339 posts)In 2001 the students rioted after a championship game loss and the police department was not prepared to deal with it properly. A number of people got hurt, including a woman who was not involved but was shot by rubber bullets anyway as she pedaled her bicycle home and just happened to be near the riot. The students are certainly behaving unacceptably but that doesn't forgive poor responses on the police department's end.

(7,299 posts).....like they did at my Alma Mater Kent State. The students were acting like fools and the police held them in check and nothing more.

(2,569 posts)Win or lose, we tend to wind up with a riot, often trashing Fourth Avenue. I'm no fan of SWAT teams, but our local cops seem to be learning after the horrific incidents with rubber bullets hitting innocent residents of the riot site: one in particular being an unfortunate fellow blinded by one while he was standing on his own porch.
Personally, I find this level of passion for something as stupid as a sporting event to be repulsive.
