Unaccounted For Number In Washington Landslide Plummets To 30

Source: CNN

Darrington, Washington (CNN) -- The number of people missing or unaccounted for in Washington state's deadly landslide has dropped to 30 from 90, officials said Saturday.

The number of confirmed dead rose to 18 from 17, Jason Biermann, a program manager for the Sohomish County Department of Emergency Management, said Saturday evening at a news conference.

Another body was found in the debris field, but was not identified and therefore wasn't counted in the death toll, he said.

Emergency management officials had said all week they expected the number of unaccounted for people to drop dramatically as residents of Darrington and nearby Oso turned up.

Unaccounted for means you don't know where they are, but there may not be anything amiss.

Example: You saw your next door neighbor working in his yard five minutes before the landslide hit. He's missing.

You haven't heard from your neighbor, but you don't know if your neighbor was home or not when the landslide hit. He's unaccounted for.

... the total is not based on number of bodies, but on number of IDENTIFIED bodies. Because the unidentified are undead?

just odd.

are from different bodies, and do genetic testing to see who they might be, they will release it as another death.

The first bodies they found were more or less intact, obvious finds, easily identifiable and able to tell cause of death. That changed quickly.
