France local elections: Socialists lose heavily - early results

Source: BBC

France's governing Socialists have suffered big losses in municipal elections, early results show, with the opposition UMP claiming victory and the far right celebrating further gains.

UMP leader Jean-Francois Cope hailed what he called a "blue wave" of support for his centre-right party.

The far-right National Front (FN) was heading for victory in up to seven towns, early results indicated.

The Socialists have been hit by growing discontent over the economy.

I seem to recall a fair number of European countries did, and suffered from it even more than the US, no? If so, it's a good wedge to force the current in power countries out of power.

Hollande made promises which were contradicted as unsustainable by his own Minister of budgetary affairs almost as soon as he took office.

The French Socialist party is essentially middle-class (and very white), with a strong base in the public sector. The party has never had much support from the industrial working class, as the British Labour party and Germany's SPD have had. France's biggest trade union, the CGT, has traditionally backed the Communist party. From the second world war until the 1980s, the communists attracted considerable support from working class voters, though more recently they have tended to vote for Jean- Marie Le Pen or far left groups, in addition to the Gaullists.Because of its relatively small electoral base, the Socialist party cannot win power without allying with other political forces. Ever since Mitterrand created the modern Socialist party, it has made electoral pacts with the communists - and taken communist ministers into socialistled governments. But in the 1990s, as the communist vote dwindled, the socialists had to search for other left-of-centre allies. - See more at: http://www.cer.org.uk/in-the-press/what-future-frances-socialist-party-needs-rethink#sthash.owK7luHI.dpuf [/div class="excerpt"]

I agree with you on Hollande's ineptitude. The people were hungry for someone to act like a real socialist. Instead, they got Hollande.

But I should point out that when the oligarchy get very, very rich and destroy a half decent economy, they go on spending sprees of propaganda and paid political actors. People are on the edge and the oligarchy has almost all the wealth. That's why it seems that during hard times people vote-in conservatives. It seems that way but what is actually happening is the rich start agitating the populace with well funded right wing organizations. The conservative uber rich, who just got richer, have tons of money to buy up media, politicians and pseudo-grass root organizations. The people are fed all this RW propaganda through media and fake populists groups. Since liberals tend to be poorer, there is less liberal push back to this propaganda. So, large groups of people believe it. A small mass of over-fed excessively wealthy people are a danger to a stable society.

The uber rich oligarchs funded Hitler, Mussolini and Pinochet, to name just a few RW despots. They do have a tendency to buy up psychopaths that go on murder sprees.

Socialists policies did not cause the flawed capitalistic system to collapse.

Socialists policies have the economic facts on their side.

I guess there are uninformed citizens in all countries.

I wonder if their media is filled with lies, omissions, and misrepresentations like the media in the U.S. ???

Will a Socialist country ever truly have a chance on this planet ?

It seems countries all over the planet continue to ignore history and the same battles rage on.

The planet is ruled by psychopaths whose only interests are power, control, and money.

and it sounded like the economy isn't doing well in France. I know several that are trying to stay in the US long term, and another one that eventually went back to Europe - but to Germany instead. These are well educated and skilled young people - engineers mostly. I also got the impression it's especially tough if you're entrepreneurial and want to start a business.

Here's an article on the problem: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/23/business/international/some-french-entrepreneurs-say-au-revoir.html?_r=0

However, I should note that none of them were thrilled by vacation policy or impressed by the healthcare system in the US.

France's National Front make significant gains in French local elections

(RTE)
France's anti-immigrant National Front is on track to win at least four towns in local elections, exit polls have shown, beating its previous record amid public dissatisfaction with President Francois Hollande's Socialists.

Candidates backed by the National Front (FN) party looked set to secure the southern towns of Beziers and Frejus, the exit polls and partial tallies showed.

It was also likely to win the eastern town of Hayange, the outgoing Socialist mayor there said.

The party run by Marine Le Pen had already made a breakthrough in last week's first round of voting by winning power in the northern town of Henin-Beaumont.

Senators are appointed by local governments. The Socialists only control it narrowly anyhow, because the number of seats isn't weighted for population, which gives it a natural rural bias.

Battered Socialists hold Paris, as far right makes gains in local elections

Text by FRANCE 24 - Latest update : 2014-03-31

Socialist Anne Hidalgo won her face-off against right-wing UMP candidate Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet in Paris, while France’s far right made gains in the second round of municipal elections on Sunday.

The Socialist Party will remain in control of Paris, with Anne Hidalgo winning roughly 54.5 percent of votes against UMP candidate Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, according to exit polls.

Hidalgo, who has served for 13 years as deputy to outgoing Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoë, will become the first female mayor of the capital.

Victories in Paris and Lyon came as consolation for the ruling Socialists, who suffered heavy defeats against the UMP in cities across the country, including Toulouse, Angers and Limoges.

Le Pen's party, which disdains the European Union and globalization and fears that Islamic culture will subvert French civilization, is aiming to leverage the municipal vote to build a grassroots base upon which to draw ahead of May elections for the European Parliament and the French presidential vote in 2017. She wants to officially scrub away the racist stigma that has long clung to the National Front and ultimately to upend the French political system by winning broad support for the party's "patriotic" doctrine.

Le Pen told The Associated Press in an interview that, while local concerns are at the center of the municipal vote, the National Front will ensure that party priorities like secularism are respected where it wins. That could be a potential flashpoint for conflict in towns with large Muslim populations where some groups seek to build mosques or serve halal food in school cafeterias.
