White House Defends Its Own Gender Pay Gap
Source: TPM
The White House defended its own pay gap between male and female employees on Monday, as it gears up for an executive and legislative push to reduce wage disparities between men and women.
During his daily briefing, White House spokesman Jay Carney was asked about a study by the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, that said women at the White House earn 88 cents for every dollar men earn.
"What I can tell you is that we have as an institution here have aggressively addressed this challenge, and obviously, though, at the 88 cents that you cite, that is not a hundred, but it is better than the national average," Carney said, as recounted by the Washington Post. "And when it comes to the bottom line that women who do the same work as men have to be paid the same, there is no question that that is happening here at the White House at every level."
He pointed out that one of the White House's two deputy chiefs of staff is a woman, and that both earn the same salary. He also said more than one in two departments are lead by women.

(712 posts)You see the pay scale on the jobs it doesn't matter who gets the job male or female.
The pay scale is the same or are they talking about only appointed positions by the President ?

(56,582 posts)Or, another way to put it, pay scales are based on assumptions that perpetuate the gender gap. The large corporations that also have a large gender gap generally also have pay scales (past a certain size, that's really the only way to do things).

(21 posts)The study is statistically meaningless and intentionally dishonest. They compare salaries based on gender of people (and they even admit to guessing on the gender in some cases).
It compares the median average while ignoring experience, title and education. So the salary of an Ivy League Educated POTUS is compared directly to a part time White House kitchen worker.

Edit - Doesn't seem so, they are comparing the median incomes of the entire White House staff. That does not address the argument of equal pay for equal work.

(27,787 posts)... any laws that would lead to full equity, they cherry pick this data ... They don't realize they legitimize the larger issue as they do so.
And that's where to focus ... If the GOP supports the laws it currently blocks, that would put pressure on the federal and state governments, as well as public and private companies ... Which the GOP does not want to do.
