Al Jazeera obtains secret Syria files

Source: Al Jazeera

Al Jazeera has gained access to confidential documents prepared for the Syrian president by his intelligence and security chiefs on the conflict raging across the nation.

The files provide an insight into President Bashar al-Assad’s strategy to suppress anti-government protests, including the lengths the government went to for protecting its strongholds.

The documents, running into hundreds of pages, pointed to a government that was desperate to keep control of the capital Damascus and included clear orders to stop protesters from getting into the city.

They also revealed detailed security plans for crushing protests in the cities of Aleppo and Idlib.

One leaked paper spelt out clear orders to top officials to give financial and moral support to Assad's supporters in Aleppo, the second major city.

1. al Jazeera doesn't exactly have a lot of credibility on the subject anymore..

it has quite blatantly transformed itself into a propaganda arm of the foreign policy of the Qatari dictator, and should be taken with a grain of salt when reporting on matters related to Saudi and Qatari interests. The editorial line dictated and enforced by the royal family has severely alienated many of its long-time employees, particularly from the Beirut office who have been vocal about the recent changes. Quite a shame, it used to be a great resource and a beacon of dissent at a time when most other major Arab media outlets were either owned by Saudi princes or Baathist bureaucrats.

If you read the article, it makes clear that the documents being reported on come from a defector from the Syrian regime.

Chalabi, Janabi, Khodada, and other "defectors" had plenty of PR stories about Iraq too;--personally I'd rather have Greeks inside of a wooden horse..

That a hoot! Yes, I'm sure they busloads of peaceful Syrian grannies the security forces were worried about stopping... Not armed fighters.

This project is going down in flames.
