Seniors see savings ($2.16 billion) on Rx drugs under 2010 health care law

Source: USA Today

WASHINGTON – Almost 4 million seniors saved about $2.16 billion through discounts for their prescription medications in 2011, the Department of Health and Human Services plans to announce today.

Government costs for prescription medications through Medicare should decrease after seniors saved more than $2 billion in 2011 through discounts offered by the program.

This, administrators say, should help keep costs to the government down in the future.

"Before, many beneficiaries were forced to stop taking the drugs," said Jonathan Blum, director of the Center for Medicare. "This reduces costs through better management."

When Medicare recipients are able to take their medications, Blum said, they are hospitalized less often for heart attacks, low blood sugar and asthma attacks. So far, he added, available data don't reflect savings for those hospitalizations to Medicare.

This is what HMO's were always claiming, that they could reduce overall costs by improving health care in general. Problem is, "costs to the government" go down dramatically if people just go ahead a die. It's the GOP health insurance plan. HMO's ended up mostly pursuing the same "deny them care" approach because of the cost savings it created.

Gee, I cannot believe this.

I got no relief whatsover, am finding myself buying drugs from India.

If that is not bad enough, the co-payments have almost doubled for 2012.

Obamacare = pile o'sh*t IMO!

Given your sentiment about Obamacare I am not inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt. While the deductible was increased by $10 for 2012 the coinsurance remained the same. Below is a summary of changes to the Part D prescription drug benefit deductible since 2006.

2006 -$250 2007 - $265 2008 - $275 2009 - $295 2010 - $310 2011 - $310 2012 - $320

After the deductible is met, Beneficiary pays 25% of covered costs. The dreaded "donut hole" still exists but will shrink each year until it is eventually eliminated around 2020. The program provides richer benefits for those Seniors who have income below designated thresholds. Millions of Seniors have benefited greatly from this program and if you indeed are not one of them you are in the minority.

However, I am a Medicare recipient.

The whole thing 'effin sucks!

Going broke fast here.

Costo and/or India are often cheaper than the plan I have for drug coverage.

They now tell women mammograms are not necessary every year.

They now tell WOMEN a hell of a lot of other crap too.

Pisses me off, pisses me off bad.

Supplement to Medicare plan costs $900/mo. plus the cost of Medicare for two persons (add in another $200. a month).

Simply sucks plain and simple and no I AM NOT LYING!!

On edit: Headline should read that these changes COST MEDICARE recipients an extra $2.16 billion at least!

Just because I am no big fan of Obamacare doesn't mean I am not a Democrat!

that majority of the GOP seniors either (1) know nothing about the savings or are (2) just blinded by the lies of their party. Personally, I would go with number two.

Now the US Supreme Court, the five justices who in my opinion care nothing about the American people and who are the face of major corporations, I find no remorse from them when they vote on Obamacare. Justice Thomas should recuse himself since his crazed wife is over one of major opposition groups and another justice lives in the twilight zone.

Matter of fact, I vote to end lifetime positions for the US Supreme Court Justices and tax exemptions for religious groups, i.e. churches. End this BS now!
