Defense official on Ukraine policy: Israeli policy needn't be identical to U.S.'

Source: Haaretz

Israeli policy is driven by its own security interests and does not need to be identical to that of the U.S., a senior defense official said Sunday in response to Haaretz's report that White House and State Department officials in Washington have built up a great deal of anger over Jerusalem's "neutrality" regarding Russia's invasion of the Crimean Peninsula.

Senior figures in the Obama administration have expressed great disappointment with the lack of support from Israel for the American position on the Ukraine crisis and with the fact that the Israeli government puts its relations with the United States and with Russia on the same plane.

The head of the Defense Ministry's political-security department, Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amos Gilad said in response to Haaretz's report that Israel's policy on the matter was driven by its own security interests, which should not be confused with that of the U.S.

"Israel is following the events… and we have here a plethora of security challenges," Gilad said in an interview with Army Radio on Sunday morning. "Israel is watching the conflict in Ukraine and recording the events, and focusing on the issue of national security which will influence not only our present, but our future as well."

"The U.S. is involved in its own way, but our [Israel's] security interests should not be defined as identical to that of any one else, even the U.S.," he added.

it claimed the vote was over the assistance the IMF gave. (These are the English speaking media outlets). It mentioned nothing of the condemnation of annexing Crimea. It was sad and pathetic. I can only hope the Yiddish press did better. If you read only the Israeli papers you would believe no such vote took place. If there was any additional coverage, I missed it. I googled all the Israeli media outlets I could find. It is truly disgraceful. If anyone wonders how close Bibi's ties are to Russia, now you know. Avigdor Lieberman has seen to that. Ditto Naftali Bennett.

I doubt i'll support the Israeli government much until Bibi, Lieberman and Bennett are gone. To me it's like Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. I don't trust any of them.

8. Fire the defense minister!

When the defense minister of Israel admonishes, mocks, criticizes and insults the US twice within a few weeks, he must be fired.

The top and bottom line is clear: Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu should fire Defense Minister Moshe “Bogie” Ya’alon. He should have been summarily fired three days ago, but of course he won’t be, despite the extraordinary influence this column has.

snip

I am questioning his judgment, common sense and fundamental understanding of US-Israeli relations. He has none.

snip

When the defense minister of Israel, a prime, “unshakable” US ally, admonishes, mocks, criticizes and insults the US, the US president, the US secretary of state and American policy, twice within a few weeks, he must be fired. No ifs, buts or howevers. Before any explanatory analysis he is guilty of crudely displaying either arrogant ingratitude or sheer foolishness. The rest is excuses.

snip

There are no angles or mitigating circumstances in this story. The usual “taken out of context,” “he actually meant it in a good way,” “he was deliberately misconstrued,” “he was honest, so give him a break” or “listen to what he says” do not and should not apply. There are seven billion people on this planet, and the US is perfectly entitled to expect that the defense minister of Israel would be the last person to lash out at it.

The alliance with the US is Israel’s unparalleled, greatest strategic asset. Despite the asymmetry and some diverging interests, the alliance is solid, stable and real. This is not about accounting. The $3 billion annual aid is not a number that can be manipulated and presented with idiotic hubris as “well, we could do without it.” It enables, allows and provides Israel with access to US state-of-the-art technology, weapons platforms and systems, intelligence and intelligence sharing. Furthermore, the US provides Israel with a comprehensive, irreplaceable diplomatic umbrella: 51 times since 1948 the US cast a veto at the UN Security Council on anti-Israeli resolutions.

9. In blistering attack, U.S. official accuses Ya'alon of 'undermining' relations with Washington

Obama administration reacts to defense minister’s criticism of U.S. 'weakness', reported in Haaretz, with unprecedented personal rebuke that 'questions his commitment' to bilateral ties and U.S. security assistance.

The Obama administration launched a blistering personal attack on Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon on Tuesday, accusing him of “undermining” the security ties between Israel and the United States. “We were shocked by Moshe Ya'alon’s comments, which seriously call into question his commitment to Israel’s relationship with the United States,” a senior administration official said.

The official’s sharp reaction, which appeared to be carefully worded, came in response to harsh criticism leveled by Ya'alon at the Obama administration in an address at Tel Aviv University, reported in Haaretz on Tuesday. Ya'alon said the United States “shows weakness” in various arenas around the world – including Ukraine – and that its allies in the Middle East are disappointed. Ya'alon said that because it is “sitting at home," America is opening itself up to terror attacks “and the United States will suffer.”

Ya'alon’s remarks sparked anger throughout official Washington, including the State Department and the White House. The irritation was compounded because of the previous incident in January, in which Ya'alon accused U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry of “messianic obsession” regarding the peace process. The frustration led to the publication – albeit on condition of anonymity - of one of the most harshly worded personal condemnations in the history of relations between the two countries.

“We were shocked by Moshe Ya'alon’s comments, which seriously call into question his commitment to Israel’s relationship with the United States,” the official said. “Moreover, this is part of a disturbing pattern in which the defense minister disparages the U.S. administration, and insults its most senior officials. Given the unprecedented commitment that this administration has made to Israel’s security, we are mystified why the defense minister seems intent on undermining the relationship.”

snip

two specific elements in the remarks reported by Haaretz probably enraged U.S. officials: Ya'alon’s characterization of Obama’s weakness in the ongoing crisis in the Ukraine, and his “threat” that terror would strike the United States at home.
