Parents of students on sinking ferry gather to protest
http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20140416000922

Around 250 parents of students on the Sewol ferry that sank off South Jeolla Province Wednesday staged a protest at Danwon High School, calling for specific information about their children’s safety.

At the high school in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, the parents demanded a list of passengers who had been rescued, following mixed news reports about the rescue operations.

The sunken ferry set off from Incheon, carrying 477 people including 324 students and 14 teachers on a school trip to Jejudo Island. The 6,325-ton Sewol began to sink at around 9 a.m. Wednesday off the coast of Jindo Island, South Jeolla Province.

Officials at the school initially said that all 338 passengers from the school had been rescued, but the Korean Coast Guard has later confirmed that 161 passengers had been rescued as of 11 a.m.

197 rescued, 2 dead as ferry sinks off south coast

A ferry carrying 477 passengers and crew was reported as sinking off the coast of Jindo Island in South Jeolla Province on Wednesday.

The passengers are reported to include 324 students and 14 staff of Danwon High School in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, who were traveling on a school trip to Jejudo Island. Including the crew and other passengers, 477 people were said to be on board the vessel.

Of the 477 passengers, two, one male and one female, were found dead. The woman was identified as 22-year-old Park Ji-young, a staff worker for the ferry company. The man is yet unidentified.

The Ministry of Security and Public Administration confirmed that 197 people had been rescued as of 12:30 p.m.

I have no idea what's going on and evidently, neither do the parents of all those kids. I know that one of the earlier tweets that I read about the ferry "listing" stated that people "in their cabins" were having trouble "keeping their balance". That made me wonder why people on a sinking ship were below deck. Then another tweet said kids were hanging on to their seats to keep from sliding overboard. And the first article on it at the Korea Herald stated, "The passengers began jumping into the sea following an onboard announcement that the ship was about to sink completely as rescue efforts were underway."

Now the Herald is saying that 368 had been rescued as of 1:10 p.m.

One death is of course a tragedy, but when a ship that big does a trick like that, with that many people on board? A WHOLE bunch of people did something right, or that number would be a LOT higher.

Hundreds of people are missing and at least two are confirmed dead after a ferry carrying 477 passengers, many of them students, sank in cold waters off South Korea’s southern coast Wednesday.

There were fears of a big jump in the number of deaths, as dozens of boats, helicopters and divers scrambled to rescue passengers who had been on the ferry travelling to the southern island of Jeju. One rescued passenger said he believed that many people had been trapped inside the ferry when it sank...

13. More than 300 people missing after South Korea ferry sinks - coastguard

Apr 2014

(Reuters) - More than 300 people were missing after a ferry sank off South Korea, the coastguard said on Wednesday, with a three-fold increase in the number of passengers unaccounted for put down to a miscalculation by officials.

The ferry was carrying 477 people, of whom 164 were confirmed rescued, coastguard officials said. Two people were confirmed dead after the ferry listed heavily onto its side and capsized in apparently calm conditions off South Korea's southwest coast.

The Ministry of Security and Public Administration had reported that 368 people had been rescued and that about 100 were missing.

It later described those figures as a miscalculation, turning what had first appeared to be a largely successful rescue operation into potentially a major disaster.

this month, I took 20+ Boy Scouts from Seoul on the Incheon Overnight Ferry to JeJudo Island for a Spring Break camping trip. Ferry ride was very cold, hate to think about water temperatures, but we had a great time on the island for the week we were there and the overnight ferry was pertty fun. Sleeping bags and foam pads on the floor. Our Troop had two rooms on the vessel, plus our bus was in the hold with 100+other vehicles.

20. South Korea ferry: prosecutors request arrest warrant for captain

Investigators examine claims that Lee Joon-seok, 69, abandoned ship as official toll rises to 29 with death of school deputy headmaster

Prosecutors in South Korea have requested a warrant for the arrest of the captain of the South Korean ferry that sank on Wednesday, leaving hundreds missing, feared dead. Warrants for the arrest of two other crew members have also been lodged with a court.

The request came as speculation mounted that more lives could have been saved had the captain, Lee Joon-seok, issued an evacuation order sooner. Investigators were also examining reports that the ferry took a sharp turn just before it started listing as well as claims that Lee, 69, abandoned the ship, as hopes dimmed for the 268 passengers still trapped inside the vessel.
...
It emerged on Friday that the crew had not acted immediately on an order by a local transportation office to tell passengers to put on life jackets and prepare to evacuate.

The order from officials on Jeju, the ferry's destination, came five minutes after the accident, but the crew did not tell passengers to leave the vessel for at least another 25 minutes. Some survivors said they did not hear any instructions to abandon the ship. Twenty of the ship's 30 crew survived, reports said.
