Bloomberg Plans a $50 Million Challenge to the N.R.A.
Source: NY Times
Michael R. Bloomberg, making his first major political investment since leaving office, plans to spend $50 million this year building a nationwide grass-roots network to motivate voters who feel strongly about curbing gun violence, an organization he hopes can eventually outmuscle the National Rifle Association.
Mr. Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York, said gun control advocates need to learn from the N.R.A. and punish those politicians who fail to support their agenda even Democrats whose positions otherwise align with his own.
They say, We dont care. Were going to go after you, he said of the N.R.A. If you dont vote with us were going to go after your kids and your grandkids and your great-grandkids. And were never going to stop.
He added: Weve got to make them afraid of us.

(843 posts)That does sound like astroturf.
The sad thing is Bloomberg is going to be less than successful, and most of the money will be wasted. If he wanted to be a philanthropist, there are a whole host of other causes that could better use the money.
Spending large sums of money to buy public opinion does not have a good track record. The Ford Edsel comes to mind. The Joyce Foundation pouring money into the Violence Policy Center has not had success proportional to the expense. The outlay of large sums of money to buy air time for Air America did not result in a media revolution.
Money is good; the NRA is bad, but it is going to take more that a fist full of bills to swing public opinion on gun control.

(2,205 posts)The only winners in this mess will be the gun and ammunition makers.
Went to my local Fleet Farm this week to buy .22 Long Rifle for squirrel season.
None available-- hasn't been any to speak of, in almost 2 years.
The clerk says in spite of the signs saying only 1 brick at a time, the 100 bricks they get every 2 to 3 weeks are gone in less than 5 hours thanks to cell phones.
Plus when it's there the price is almost 3 times, what it was 2 years ago.

(10,274 posts)I head part of the reason were people using high cap mags with say their 10/22 where in the past they shot 5-10 round mags the 25 round mag is not uncommon. What do you think, it seems odd that people would still be stockpiling them.

(2,205 posts)But looking at the shelves it was clear that almost everything is being hoarded.
There was no .38 special or .357 Mag. The prices were outrageous too even if they had it (which they didn't) $38.99 for 50 rounds of .357 Remington.
They did have a few AR-15 clones for $1800.00 The clerk said they sell a lot of them.
It seems to me that someone who pays $1800.00 for a rifle isn't just going to hand it over or allow anyone to take it.
There are millions of these around anyway.

(843 posts)I got queued in on Bloomberg. He is a Republican from the start, and is not really a progressive or Democrat. It sure looks like he is inflaming the issue of gun control for the purpose of putting a mill stone on Democrats in future elections. He seems to be attempting some kind of twisted play on the association fallacy. I do not quite understand how a $50 million dollar effort can lead to legal gun owners associating the badness of gun control with Democrats running for office, but Bloomberg has the cash and can spend it any way he pleases.

(906 posts)which most reliable estimates put at about 4-5 million members - about 5-6% of all gun owners in the US.
If (former-)Mayor Mikey and his gang of illegal mayors wants to spend his money buying up media ads let him do it. It will drive increased NRA membership and if 1/2 of gun owners contribute only $10 per year then they'll have $300 million+ in opposition to his superstitious nonsense.
For Bloomberg, it's not about safety or giving a crap it's all about his desire to control the behavior of others to suit his whim.

(2,205 posts)His WAR on 16 Ounce Sodas put him on the map for being an Ass-Clown.
Bloomberg seems to believe that the highest purpose of government is to tell people how to live their lives down to the most minute detail.
After Judge Tingling struck down the soda ban, Bloomberg was of course embarrassed that his hand has been metaphorically slapped by Judge Tinglingor would be if he had any sense of shame. Instead, because he is so arrogant, he is outragedin the way that only someone who is supremely assured of the correctness of a position they have taken can be, the facts, the science, and the law be damned.
Instead of helping the poor and homeless he spends his $$$$ on, a likely to fail attempt, to disarm a bunch of cowboys in Wyoming

(774 posts)Everytown project blowing up in Bloombergs face
Yesterday there was one and today there are scores of Facebook pages dubbed Everytown for Gun Safety for several states and even local communities; the work of gun rights activists waging guerrilla warfare against billionaire Michael Bloombergs $50 million launch yesterday of a new gun control lobbying effort with the same name.
All of the Facebook pages have one thing in common. They all promote gun safety, including links to such things as the National Rifle Associations Eddie Eagle program and the three key gun safety golden rules: Always keep guns pointed in a safe direction, always keep guns unloaded until ready to use, and always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
The launch of so many Facebook pages in the wake of Bloombergs appearance yesterday on NBCs Today show with Shannon Watts of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (MDA), a group he funded underscores the ferocity of Second Amendment activists. Bloombergs new Everytown for Gun Safety organization consolidates MDA with Mayors Against Illegal Guns, another anti-gun organization funded by the former New York mayor.

(19,247 posts)IE, most people agree we should enact more laws to prevent school shootings, guns from getting into the hands of criminals, etc. So, there is the "broad" component.
But when it comes time to vote, it's rare to find a voter who ranks "new gun control laws" as one of the top reasons they go to the voting booth. There's the "shallow" component.
Gun owners, and particularly NRA members, have a VERY focused view on the issue. It's COMMON to find people who vote SPECIFICALLY because they oppose new gun control measures.
Until someone finds a way to get the gun control movement organized as fanatically as the NRA members and their supporters, there won't be some magically mass movement to enact strict nationwide gun control measures in this country. And IMO, even $50 million isn't enough to start such a counter to the NRA.
