Sebelius Said to Weigh Run for Kansas Senate Seat
Source: New York Times
WASHINGTON In her darkest hour last fall, Kathleen Sebelius suffered one of the deepest cuts from an old family friend who accused her of gross incompetence over the rollout of the Affordable Care Act and demanded that she resign as secretary of health and human services. Now she is weighing revenge.
Ms. Sebelius is considering entreaties from Democrats who want her to run against that old friend, Senator Pat Roberts, Republican of Kansas.
Several Democrats said this week that Ms. Sebelius had been mentioned with growing frequency as someone who could wage a serious challenge to Mr. Roberts, 77, who is running for a fourth term and is considered vulnerable. One person who spoke directly to Ms. Sebelius said that she was thinking about it, but added that it was too soon to say how seriously she was taking the idea.
It was only last week, after all, that Ms. Sebelius, 65, said that she would step down from her cabinet job.

(11,014 posts)The entire campaign will be full of disinformation about ACA and she will become the punching bag. We need a democrat who can win.

(1,290 posts)There are no Dems that can win in KS. (Home of Phelps's Westboro Church) IF the ACA gains traction and becomes popular (which we are seeing signs of) Sebelius may have a chance. (MAY)

(62,444 posts)Amid the "Sibelius resigns after clusterfuck" stories - which were entirely inappropriate, given that signups had exceeded goal, my question was what is the filing deadline for whatever races are open in Kansas.

(102,283 posts)Frankly, I can't imagine her even wanting to return to Kansas, given how ugly the political climate has become--much less run for statewide office.

(21,475 posts)She gave up her Governorship to join the Obama Administration. There are still a lot of people there that like her. She is probably the ONLY Democrat that could win the Senate seat.

And this is not going to be a good year for Democrats.

(34,111 posts)It is so toxic here that I can't imagine there will be more than a tiny few elected with a D after their name and that is a tiny few making it a tiny bit less than now and there are already a tiny few. When she was elected Governor she was running against a total and complete whack job and that is how she won. That kind of whack job is now considered a prerequisite to get into office. People are pissed at Pat Roberts for not living here for I can't remember how long and still representing the state. I don't think she could make a dent in his re-election. I am not sure anyone can. He is established and no matter how much he pisses people off I don't think he will be budged.
More power to her if she wants to run. I would love to eat those words above, LOVE TO and would publicly do it if she won.
She was elected In 2002 another bad year for dems. She was relected In great year for dems 2006.
Although Brownback Is in danger of losing as governor a democrat running for senate has a tough road In Kansas. She would be best chance they have.

By any objective measure, it was an unqualified success.

(18,635 posts)I for one think she'd be an excellent candidate for the job. She's already proven to the state that she can govern.
