Hank Aaron, Atlanta Braves receive racist hate mail
Source: Washington Post
The Atlanta Braves received a bevy of angry, racist letters this week after an interview baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron did with USA Today.
A few days ago, Aaron, the senior vice president of the Braves, told USA Today: Sure, this country has a black president, but when you look at a black president, President Obama is left with his foot stuck in the mud from all of the Republicans with the way hes treated. We have moved in the right direction, and there have been improvements, but we still have a long ways to go in the country. The bigger difference is that back then they had hoods. Now they have neckties and starched shirts.
That set off a firestorm of mail to the Braves, including a letter from someone named Edward. (USA Today only referred to those who sent letters by their first names.) The letter, which included racial epithets, said: Hank Aaron is a scumbag piece of s.
The Braves have been besieged by hundreds of letters, e-mails and phone calls deriding Aaron for comments he made to USA TODAY Sports, the newspaper said.

(62,416 posts)and yes, Barack Obama have been to stand openly and do what they do.
I just can't even conceive of the courage these men - and also the women (Althea Gibson) - who have broken the barriers must have had.

Is what gives me hope.
Their bravery is an example to all of us.

I'm not even a baseball fan, but I am a huge fan of Hank Aaron!

(45,251 posts)The only thing I would say is that his words could possibly be interpreted to imply that all Republicans are modern day KKK, which I am sure he did not mean.
Every word today gets so picked apart that people lose focus and miss the truth of the statement as a whole, which is often the motive for nitpicking wording.

(23,102 posts)Guess a lot of folks are feeling guilty about being the type of people Aaron was talking about? Way too many redneck racists are still alive and spewing bullshit.

(44,576 posts)Aaron and Obama have something more significant than skin color in common: both have also committed the sin of surpassing white people.
According to the authors of their hate mail, there would be no such thing as racism if non-whites simply did the things that all whites "always" do -- work hard, set financial priorities, embrace self-discipline, fulfill obligations, get educated, obey the law, always give their best effort, compete fair and square. However, when a non-white person appears to have done all those things and come up a winner, that makes some whites even angrier. Why? Because it means that one of them was "defeated." Rather than lauding the successful non-white as a role model and living proof that their "theory" is correct, they throw tantrums and write nasty letters -- "How DARE you presume to be as good, if not SUPERIOR, to me!"

(10,495 posts)Month, or some such B.S. name for the 5th year in a row! I was not aware of it until now (I live in a neighboring county). The County Judge says it's not racial, it is just to celebrate what those Veterans did. WTF!!!

They aren't celebrating the 'veterans,' they are celebrating the concept.

(999 posts)Back in 1973-74 when Aaron was closing in on 714 the Braves and Aaron started to receive a tremendous amount of hate mail and death threats from people who were upset that a black man was going to break a white mans baseball record. Funny thing is the only white man with over 600 home runs is Jim Thome. Hank Aaron is an amazing man and it is a shame that he once again has to go through this kind of thing again. one step forward two steps back.

(999 posts)If you meant to be sarcastic simply put the emotion. My post clearly stated that people were upset that a black man was going to beat a white mans record. I guess you think it is funny to make light of death threats back in a time when blacks were told they were not welcome in some parts of Georgia after dark. I am sorry that my sentence structure does not meet your strict guidelines. No sarcasm intended at all.

(2,188 posts)You said "Funny thing is the only white man with over 600 home runs is Jim Thome." You did not say after Hank Aaron. There is no way around this, you made an error. Sorry, but that statement was not clear in the least. No need to go on a rant and accuse me of thinking racism is funny.

(15,185 posts)and while this country has indeed made a lot of progress, it's clear that with technology, new venues to spew out hatred have also unfortunately emerged. Having lived in the South for several years (and being a minority myself), I met a lot of genuinely wonderful people, but I also encountered a bizarre inability to let go of the past and not fully admit the sins of their fathers (and this was NOT something I, in any way pressed people on). I sensed a clear defensiveness of the Civil War, Slavery, Jim Crow, and the legacy of racism it left. And this was from educated and intelligent people I certainly would not consider racist. But such attitudes give cover for the even viler and nastier attitudes held by a smaller minority.
Now, this in no way lets the North and other regions off the hook. On the contrary. For example, I live in the MI suburbs and it's easy to sweep things under the rug, but in reality this region is heavily segregated too.
