Reid calls ranchers backers domestic terrorists
LAS VEGAS (AP) Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is calling armed backers of a Nevada rancher domestic terrorists for using guns in a grazing rights battle with the federal Bureau of Land Management.
The Democrat was speaking at an event hosted by the Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://bit.ly/QrWVIj ) Thursday when he referred to Saturdays armed confrontation between BLM agents and self-described militia members supporting Bunkerville rancher Cliven Bundy.
No shots were fired.
After the confrontation, the BLM released almost 400 of Bundys cattle that had been rounded up. The BLM says its action was spurred by Bundys failure to pay more than $1 million in grazing fees on federal land. Bundy says he doesnt recognize federal authority on the land his family has used since the 1870s.
Reid says a federal task force is being formed to resolve the dispute.

(35,977 posts)Terrorism has little to do with what weapon the terrorist uses, or whether they have a mask or not. It's about threatened and actual violence by a non-state actor aimed at a state. Not recognising the state and doing what these folk are doing definitely falls into the category of domestic terrorism...
edited to add: I just realised yr the same person who a week or so ago said you kind of support Bundy and those extremist RW militias..

(90,860 posts)Sometimes they call themselves one thing, sometimes another. Sometimes they espouse different things, like the murderous elderly bastard in Kansas who thought he was murdering Jews but murdered three other innocents instead. But they have certain things in common and they are connected.
Let me repeat: They are connected. If nothing else, the Internet and social media make that a foregone conclusion by now.
Rachel Maddow was all over this issue last night. It is about @#$%! time that someone like Harry Reid said it out loud.

(15,189 posts)It costs us taxpayers money for the BLM to round up his cattle and then let them go. And then for the security, and cops who had to keep an eye on the home grown terrorist.
I know his name is not Al. But he's about as smart as Al.

(291 posts)My husband keeps looking for a reason for this guys behavior. He is crazy, no other reason. He grazes his cattle on Federal land and refuses to pay the fees, I have no sympathy for him. When you are self-employed, and your business is having trouble, for various reasons, much of which in farming and ranching is because of climate change. That is not the fed's fault, it is because the world is changing, your business climate is changing, the climate is changing. Water is scarce, especially in Nevada and pointing a gun at someone doesn't change that. I hope I don't sound like I am babbling. But his world is changing and that is not the fault of the Fed's. He is just scared shitless, him times 2,000 could make this a scary scenario.

I'm glad you have no sympathy for him at any rate.

(291 posts)I want to make it clear, I have no sympathy for this guy. He should be paying his bills, including grazing fees. I just sometimes think these guys are afraid because their world is changing - that includes climate change. So they respond with a gun and blame everything in the federal government. I actually hate guys like that. You need to drive through western Kansas and see the lush fields of corn. This is semi-arid country and corn is a high water crop. They grow it with lots of irrigation. That type of farming is NOT SUSTAINABLE-okay. They are in lala land. They think global warming is not real-they come up to me and say I don't believe in global warming. I tell them it is not a religion-it is based on science. When their livelihood becomes doomed-they are going to become very afraid, and arm themselves even more. I think sometimes they could become dangerous at that point. Anyway-we are on the same page, I don't like them and you don't like them. I just see them up close.

In addition, the idiots showing up are being depicted as crazy extremists who want to think they can kill the gubmint.
Newsflash. Shoot one of these cops and he will get a funeral with a flag draped coffin.
You get shot and you will NOT go down in history as a martyr for the cause like Horst Wessel. You will be associated with the likes of Charley Manson.

(28 posts)Whenever citizens dare to stand up and oppose the government, whether on Wall Street or in the desert, it is right to label them terrorists.
LanternWaste
(37,748 posts)What if those same citizens do not recognize a legitimate government, and refuse to pay the same fees and taxes as everyone else, aim weapons at law enforcement, and choose to place children in front of them as shields?
Did any of that happen during the Wall Street protests? Seems to me that conflating the two (regardless of whether its disingenuous or not) is an accurate example of bias (at best).
(However, I do realize that many people will melodramatically sing any false equivalency that may be imagined to better validate a striking level or irrational thought...)
