Fraternity shuts Ole Miss branch after noose tying

Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A national fraternity group has closed its University of Mississippi chapter after three members were accused of tying a noose around the neck of a statue of the first black student to enroll in the then-all white Southern college.

The university announced Thursday that the national office of Sigma Phi Epsilon, based in Richmond, Va., had closed its Ole Miss chapter. The names of the three students haven’t been released. They were kicked out of the fraternity.

Besides the noose, someone draped a pre-2003 Georgia state flag with a Confederate battle emblem in its design on the face of the James Meredith statue in the pre-dawn hours of a Sunday morning in February.

Ole Miss spokesman Tom Eppes says the students face university disciplinary proceedings and the FBI is investigating.

#1 because their daddy was in a fraternity, #2 because they are republicans, #3 because it is a better housing option than the dorms or sharing an apartment.

and learn not to do what these guys did! They violated the "balanced man" doctrine which this particular fraternity espouses. Fraternity chapters are not independent franchises and are directly answerable to the national head. Ergo the suspension of the Mississippi chapter.

Four years of belonging to a fraternity was a great learning experience for me.
It sounds like your experience was not so great and you are of course entitled to your opinion.

Although it may be a bit prejudiced on my part, my experience taught me that there is a reason that most frat guys are conservative Republicans. Same mind set, same bullshit when they get into the real world.

They were a minority but bullied their way into officers and leaders. I hated some of them. They just could be today's tea party House members!

01. No, my father was not in the fraternity because his university has no fraternities
02: No, I'm a Democrat and my chapter were mostly Democrats
03: I lived in my own apartment and not in the Fraternity House and paid for it by working.

Thanks for insulting me. I appreciate it. Maybe I should alert this post for being offensive and over the top.

When I came out (after college) all of my brothers (except one) were very accepting.

Recently, the President of the chapter when I pledged came out.

My chapter was very diverse - Hispanics, blacks, whites, Asians, Jewish, Native Americans were all brothers

wasn't the issue these men were concerned with, but rather, the fact he is black and his enrollment at the University led to the desegregation of the University, was and is the issue.
