Latest White House Gatecrasher a Real Fox

Source: abc NEWS

While President Obama deals with Russian President Vladimir Putin abroad, the groundskeepers and Secret Service agents who guard the White House are trying to combat an equally wily opponent at home.

The latest gatecrasher to show up at the president’s home uninvited is not a “Real Housewife” but a real, live fox.

The little red fox was first spotted on the White House grounds last fall, just before the government shutdown.

According to The Wall Street Journal, while White House staffers found themselves at home during the furlough, the fox made himself at home at the White House.

“We don’t mind that he passes through, but we don’t want him to stay,” Dale Haney, the superintendent of the White House grounds, told the newspaper. “No overnight guests.”

Though the ground that houses the First Family is one of the most highly-protected properties in the world, the fox has managed to outfox everyone, literally.

Most red foxes south of Canada are descendants of foxes introduced from more warm-tolerant european subspecies. The subspecies native to north America are cold-loving critters that came and went with glaciation.

Lots of rabbits, squirrels, and other little critters on the White House Grounds and
he/she can keep bunnies and what not from eating Michelle's garden.

For a fox those grounds would be really sweet .... no traffic, coyotes, or people w/little
dicks who like to kill things like this fox just for fun. As long as he/she doesn't have
mange then this fox would be a nice addition to the White House ground's ecology.

Besides he looks like Joe Biden.

A perfect example of how nature balances itself. He (or she) will keep the grounds clean of little varmints, and will certainly be smarter than any Republican who shows up.

... it always looked like she was somewhat amused by what I was doing. But she was more then
happy to let me or the tractor chase "critters" to her. One time I got to see her den w/ her
pups from a little distance.

BTW is it needed to hurt a fox's feelings and compare them to republicans?

Didn't mean to "cast aspersions on his/her asparagus". I've always thought it was a damn shame that Murdock chose "Fox" as his station name, as they are smart animals. I've never seen "smart" over at Faux Noise. And I certainly haven't seen it among the Rethugs...not in over 30 years, anyhow.

The mess wasn't pleasant.

FWIW, my dog "won." The squirrel didn't stand a chance.

It's not about who will "win," it's about the blood and guts on the WH lawn.

.... and the dogs don't get to run the White House grounds unsupervised too.

Male Portuguese Water Dogs are 50 to 60 LBS (rough #s) ... Females way a little
less ..... Red Foxes seldom go more then 18 to 20 pounds. Foxes are pretty
common but they tend to be nocturnal and they try to avoid humans and dogs
when ever possible. Odds are you have them living around you right now but
through evolution and time they have learned how to be scarce when people
are around.

Although sometimes curiosity gets the best of them and they like to see what
"them crazy humans" are doing.

The only real risk to the Obama's dogs might be mange or maybe rabies but
the rabies chance could be reduced by feeding the fox or giving him a shot of
some meds so he/she would get rabies resistance.

Now their might be a real security reason to remove the fox from the grounds
but from an ecological stand point the White House Grounds should be able to
support a red fox or two with no problems. No doubt that the Potomac River
area supports a nice population of foxes.

sorry to babble but they do look like Joe Biden when they smile and I like the idea that
the POTUS and the White House staff could look out on a snowy winter day and see a "little
wild" on the grounds.

That is one of the perks of being POTUS .... open the door and let the dogs out but I
highly doubt that the dogs go outside w/out somebody watching them at all times
and especially when they are off leash. But once again the Fox would know almost all
the time when dogs and people are out long before the people or dogs would see it.

I have watched a fox for hours from a tree stand when deer hunting and he or she
was long gone before any dog or human would come into few. Besides the Obama
dogs have not been trained to track fox by scent .... although they both could smell
and tell that "something" is around.

I don't know why you have this odd and insistent idea that no dog will go after a fox. Do you not realize that the whole idea of the now pooh-poohed "fox hunt" is for dogs to chase after--and kill-- a fox that is running for its life?

... the Obama's own Portuguese Water Dogs that haven't had one minute of training to
scent*, trail, or run foxes. I have worked with dogs and taught dog training for years ....
I also have a b.s. in ecology and 30 + years experience in working in the outdoors and
with wildlife. The odds that a fox on the White House Grounds would have a negative
impact on the 2 dogs is very very small except for a chance of mange or rabies again
which might be pretty simple fixes.

Did you eve look @ the 2nd video you posted?

they would run and look for it.

hunters, you name it, will do this. About the only one that sat on his ass and observed the scene was an elderly pug.

I think I'll take the POV of the people at the WH before I sign off on your assertions, sorry.

I looked at all the videos. If you want some graphic "kill" videos you can go to YOUTUBE and find plenty of them (all sorts of dogs, too--not just the classic beagles--you know, I lived in UK when people in the countryside still rode to hounds, and they'd bring any old dog along for the hunt...it's only in old movies featuring Americans with bad English accents that they all "match&quot .

The point is that dogs run after foxes, or any 'varmints' that cross their path. It's in their nature. That can be a problem for the minder of those WH dogs.

But for a fence this dog would be GONE:

FOX planted the fox in the WH lawn to spy on the Obamas. It probably has a chip implanted that transmits video and audio to the FOX studios. See Tea Party, we can all create conspiracies out of nothing.

Capture him and quarantine him before relocating to a more appropriate habitat - Rock Creek Park, for example.
