Georgia’s ‘Guns Everywhere Bill’
Source: msnbc Rachel Maddow show
Just a few minutes ago, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) signed sweeping new gun legislation into law, and while its technically the Safe Carry Protection Act, NBC News Gabe Gutierrez noted that many have labeled it the Guns Everywhere Bill.
One of the most permissive state gun laws in the nation, it will allow licensed owners to carry firearms into more public places than at any time in the past century, including bars and government buildings that dont have security checkpoints.
The law also authorizes school districts to appoint staffers to carry firearms. It allows churches to opt-in if they want to allow weapons. Bars could already opt-in to allow weapons, but under the new law they must opt out if they want to bar weapons. Permit-holders who accidentally bring a gun to an airport security checkpoint will now be allowed to pick up their weapon and leave with no criminal penalty. (At Atlantas Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, a record 111 guns were found at TSA screening areas last year.)
Americans for Responsible Solutions, the group co-founded by former Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords, has called the legislation the most extreme gun bill in America.
Despite the opposition of gun-safety reformers and Georgia law enforcement, the bill was passed with relative ease. The governors Democratic challenger, state Sen. Jason Carter, voted for it, too, though he made it slightly less extreme, helping eliminate some provisions, including a measure allowing guns on college campuses.

(48,181 posts)House Bill 60, or the Safe Carry Protection Act of 2014 -- which opponents have nicknamed the "guns everywhere bill" -- specifies where Georgia residents can carry weapons. Included are provisions that allow residents who have concealed carry permits to take guns into some bars, churches, school zones, government buildings and certain parts of airports.

(32,068 posts)By your post you seemed to be implying that a majority of states allowed concealed carry but not open carry. A vast majority allow both. I was not commenting specifically about the GA bill.

(32,068 posts)There are currently 43 states with open carry laws. So your travel may be somewhat confining.

(11,495 posts)Guns in bars, what could go wrong here?
A few years back over in Idaho some guy got into an argument with two other people in a bar. Later at the two were leaving the other guy cam out into the parking lot and shot them. He had a CWP. It was just lucky that the didn't go off "inside" the bar where others could have been shot also.
I wonder what is going to happen when one of the idiots who feel the need to pack a gun everywhere goes to the capitol in Georgia, or some other government office, and starts shooting? Will the idiots like this governor finally figure out just how stupid it is to let people carry guns wherever they want to?

(2,702 posts)In other words, terrorists only need to get a gun permit, then they can try to find ways to sneak guns onto a plane with no fear of a penalty? If they're ever caught, just show a permit and claim it was an accident.
I'm glad I don't have to fly in or out of Georgia.
how did that get in there?

Were they not allowed to permit weapons on their grounds before?

(40 posts)You could also carry a firearm in a bar as long as you had permission from the owner. This law makes it so that property owners are responcible for prohibiting weapons on their property.

(11 posts)But there's no reason a church leader should have been required to ban weapons.

They passed a law in Virginia that allows guns in bars and 1 month later there was a shootout with police at a bar near me in a really rich neighborhood not usually known for crime. Of course, my 1st reaction was "duh".
