Donald Sterling is a registered Republican

Source: Mother Jones

Does it really matter whether racist LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling is a registered Democrat? Or a Republican? Or a member of the Pirate Party of Russia?

Well, according to multiple conservative media outlets, yes, it does matter. On Sunday, National Review ran a blog post originally titled, "Racist Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Is a Democrat." The post breathlessly noted a handful of contributions he made in the early 1990s to Democrats politicians, including California politician Gray Davis and Sen. Bill Bradley, who had played in the NBA. (Sterling has owned his NBA team since the early 1980s.) The headline has since been changed to "Racist Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Has Only Contributed to Democrats," with an update reading, "his official party affiliation is not known."

On Sunday, Michael Hiltzik, a Los Angeles Times columnist, tweeted that local voter records show Sterling to be a registered Republican "since 1998." We followed up on that, and a search of the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder's website for Sterling's name, date of birth, and address confirmed that he's registered as a Republican.

Frankly I think this whole game is stupid. Conservatives were quick to try and link Sterling to Dems, now it comes back to bite them in the ass.

What a bunch of fools.

With more to come:

http://www.mediaite.com/online/state-farm-pulls-clippers-sponsorship-over-sterling-controversy/

"Transition CEO Steve Stoute, who represents State Farm, announced on ESPN’s Cowherd radio show that State Farm would not sponsor the Clippers as long as Sterling was owner. Stoute said sponsorship of individual players might continue, but not of the organization itself.

“I’m telling the brands, ‘Let’s pull sponsorship,’ starting with State Farm,” Stoute said. “When you have things like this taking place, somebody has to stand up.”

Stoute added that he expected more companies to pull their sponsorship in the next forty-eight hours. A full list of Clippers sponsorships can be found here."

The big difference between Democrats and Republicans is that Democrats are not jumping on the bandwagon defending his remarks. Republicans defended Cliven Bundy's ignorant remarks .

After making a couple in the 1990s and then changing parties, he hasn't opened his wallet. Usually these super rich loudmouths who like to throw their weight around can't help but get involved at some level.

I am pretty sure that I have heard the expression too but I could not tell you who said it. I even tried goggling your quote but got nothing. I once asked a Republican about this phenomenon and his response was that he was not aware this to be the case. Denial? Ignorance? I could not tell you. Welcome to the Democratic Underground wshaffer . We got a lot of smart folks around here, I am surprised someone has not come along yet with the answer to your question. Who knows, maybe you are indeed the author of this quote and if so it is a good one.

On edit: it looks like Bill Mahar may have said something like this.

Conservative media's goal is to get whatever scoop they want to out there immediately and spread it far and wide, irrelevant of it's legitimacy. They've mastered Twain's critique perfectly. The only way to stop them is to learn how to investigate faster than they can whip up their bullshit. Because if that doesn't happen, they're going to continue. That's a fact, Jack.

Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI) inaccurately claimed Tuesday during a House Financial Services Committee hearing that Clippers owner Donald Sterling is a Democrat, shortly after the NBA banned him for life for making widely-denounced racist comments.

"We've all heard of the comments that were recently made by Mr. Sterling from the LA Clippers, who is a Democrat -- made absolutely offensive comments," Duffy said, praising President Barack Obama for condemning the comments.
