Ukraine: Pro-Russian separatists want to "purge" Slavyansk of "Gypsies"
Source: Die Welt / Romea
Another attack on local Romani people took place on 22 April in the Ukrainian town of Slavyansk, which is currently being ruled by pro-Russian separatists. German news server Die Welt quotes one of the separatists as saying the pro-Russian forces want to purge the town of "gypsies".
...
Local Romani residents have now confirmed information published last week by Romea.cz. About 10 men came to their homes after dark to carry out the attack.
...
One pro-Russian separatist has a clear opinion of Roma and believes the attacks on their homes in Slavyansk are in order. "Local residents are coming to us and complaining about Gypsies," Ruslan Mikeda, a fully-bearded man guarding the occupied headquarters of the secret service, told Die Welt.
"Gypsies are criminals trafficking in drugs. Our men are serious - we want to purge the town of Gypsies," said Mikeda, who told Die Welt that he spent several days on the Maidan during the winter and even joined the neo-Nazi Right Sector before realizing that the entire uprising was "in the hands of the Jews" and switching sides to join the pro-Russian separatists. His Facebook profile is full of calls to anarchy and war interlaced with anti-Semitism.

(6,407 posts)They ally with Russia's oligarchy, use appeals of uber-nationalism to an ethnic group, brazen propaganda, and now ethnic cleansing.

That would be an uncomfortable location from which to out oneself as an infiltrator.
What is interesting, obviously, is the reason he states for switching sides, that the vaunted 'neo-nazis' of Kiev were just pawns of the Joooooos!!!!

(10,575 posts)According to the Internet media, the headquarters of the nationalists are moving to Dnepropetrovsk for protection of Igor Kolomoysky and his millieu, since the bounty for his head has already exceeded 8 million rubles.

(10,575 posts)oligarchs and lament that nothing has changed. I bet some deep psychological issues are at work.
"Corruption is still flowering in the same way as before. You can still buy a place in the police, the prosecution and in a court as before. All the criminal schemes from Yanukovych's time are now headed by new functionaries. The system has not changed. That is why we are saying that the revolution is not finished yet."
...
Pravy Sektor has a paramilitary wing, but Mr Tarasenko denied the charge of extremism and anti-semitism. "If we are extremists, then hundreds of thousands people in Ukraine are also extremists," he said. Some senior figures in Pravy Sektor were Jewish, he added, and the movement stood for an independent Ukraine, free of control by either Russia or the West.

(62,270 posts)Basically the Maiden fascists were a minority whereas the Russian fascists are a majority.
This is why you have Maiden fascists downplaying the anti-Semitic stuff because they know they are a minority and can be easily marginalized.
But the separatists? They know they can say anything they want, because groups of armed fascists need all the help they can get.

(2,769 posts)There were rarely any "gypsy" men to be seen because they were already in jail, placed in quarters with men who had TB so they would be infected themselves. The women and children who remained would be seen at Moskovsky train station. Every spring, Russia would load them into buses and drop them off in the middle of the night in Dagestan or Georgia. It was common knowledge. I'd ask my students what had happened to them and this is what they would tell me. It seemed ridiculous until I read an article in the Saint Petersburg Times that confirmed it.
I passed the gypsies everyday because the school I worked at was a few blocks down from the Moskovsky train station.

(2,769 posts)So many op-eds and more investigative work do not appear in the archives.
I did find a reference to the official Operation Tabor ("Gypsy Camp), as it was called.
Scroll down to "Roma Women Rounded Up."

(Wow, scanning through that whole archive brings back so many memories.)
As far as the tactic of placing healthy men in close quarters with men already infected with TB, that was a well known tactic that occurred in the notorious Kresty Prison. This prison was seriously the creepiest, most depressing place to walk past. You'd see women standing outside trying to write messages in the air to the men crowded around the tiny windows, trying to get a message to someone inside. The ground would be littered with tiny, folded letters that the men would throw out, hoping that someone would stop by, pick one up and it would somehow end up in the right hands. Always showed up in the Amnesty International list of prisons committing serious human rights abuses. It was closed a few years back. Last I heard it is to be some sort of entertainment/ shopping/ hotel complex. Even when I was there and it was still open, there were very controlled tours being offered due to the history of the place and its famous prisoners such as Trotsky and Kazimir Malevich.
But, yes, so many young, healthy men would end up with a drug-resistent form of TB. It was a vicious cycle. Without healthy men to contribute to the care of the family, the women and children would resort to petty criminality. The petty criminality would lead to harsh actions such as the the Gypsy Camp operation I mentioned above.
In case you are interested in Kresty Prison, btw.

(24,692 posts)He was terribly frightened. He had come back to get some childrens things, he was in genuine shock. I stopped him and asked him to tell me what was happening.
The whole Roma community had left town the day before. He said it was because they had fired on the houses from the street. All the community leaders received threats that they would be totally exterminated, including the children, if they did not leave. He said that the armed people only want Russian-speakers to stay in the town.
This did not just affect Russians. He mentioned that his neighbours who speak Ukrainian received similar threats.

Possibly snark, but he didn't answer me, so I don't know what he meant.
Perhaps he comes from that region which explains the views he is posting here.
What is it abour Europeans and the Roma, anyway?

(2,769 posts)The Soviet Union invaded Finland in the 1930s and occupied a region know as Karelia. The Finnish people there (maybe half a million) were forced to leave their homes and start new lives in Finland. After some back and forth, Finnish Karelia was left independent in name, but a de facto part of Finland. It was made an official part of Finland in 1997. Many Russian nationalists feel that Finnish Karelia should be reunited with the Russian region of Karelia and they should all be a part of Russia.
What's more, they also believed that Finland has secret plans to invade Russia and steal Russian Karelia from them.
Which is completely and utterly absurd, but they believe it and have all sorts of little penny press pamphlets that "prove" it.
What Putin really wants, and what I think that particular poster means, is to take Finland back as an ally. To have it within the Russian sphere of influence.
Having traveled by bus countless times between Finland and Russia, I can say that the difference between the two countries is astounding.
