Several Injured in Clashes in Donetsk (Ukraine)

Source: Moscow Times/Reuters

Several people were wounded when pro-Russian separatists attacked a rally in support of Ukrainian unity in the separatist-held city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine on Monday, a Reuters reporter said.

Dozens of men dressed in military fatigues and wielding baseball bats waded into the rally of some 2,000 people in Donetsk, heart of a separatist uprising against Kiev. They lobbed fire-crackers and what appeared to be at least one stun grenade.

A Reuters reporter saw at least five people with head injuries, including both protesters and separatists. The wounds did not appear to be life-threatening but the violence was a fresh sign of the spiralling tensions and disorder in the east.

The protest, during which people chanted "Donetsk is Ukraine!" and waved the Ukrainian flag, dispersed after the violence.

Violence breaks out at pro-Ukraine rally in Donetsk

By Terri Rupar

A peaceful pro-Ukraine rally in the eastern city of Donetsk turned violent today. Details are still emerging, but The Post's Griff Witte and William Booth were there. Here's what they, and other journalists on the ground, were seeing and tweeting

I am serious.
I remember reading about how fascist attacks on international students, minorities and immigrants by Saint Petersburg skinheads were their own fault.
How did they bring such brutality upon themselves?
Well, see, according to the Saint Petersburg head of police (you know, the guy who was supposed to be investigating such acts), they would see groups of men who looked like skinheads, get scared, and then run. The running antagonized the skinheads who, of course, had no choice but to chase them down and beat them beyond recognition or even throw them in front of metro trains.
Yes. If you are black and you see a gang of what looks like skinheads, if you run, you are instigating them to act like a gang of skinheads.

I wish I was kidding.
After reading and hearing such things so often, I must admit that I would not be surprised to see an article about Ukrainian fascists using their heads to attack baseball bats held by pro-civil rights activists.

It says that 4 people were taken away in handcuffs and held at the PR building. "For exchange."

Wonder if it's to try to get Ponomarev's deputy released. The DNR has said that it's "at war" and speaks of "traitors" and "spies", as well as "sabotage" and "diversions." They don't seem to be using the word "traitor" lightly, either.

It's attitude, if what Tsar'ov tweeted is correct (it was a jpg of a document allegedly from the DNR) that the referendum they want won't question the existence of the DNR. That they consider an unchallengeable, unalterable fact and anybody--whether journalists, other people, government officials, who challenge this are "traitors". But whether it should be independent, join Russia, or be part of Ukraine--which would assume a coordinated federal system to start.
