Mark Jackson: Fans should boycott

Source: ESPN

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson had a clear message as to how fans should react to the racist comments allegedly made by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling: Boycott Game 5 at the Staples Center.

"If it was me, I wouldn't come to the game," Jackson said Monday. "I believe as fans, the loudest statement they could make as far as fans is to not show up to the game."

Jackson was quick to point out that his advice doesn't apply just to Clippers supporters but to Warriors fans as well.

"As an African-American man that's a fan of the game of basketball and knows its history and knows what's right and what's wrong, I would not come to the game tomorrow, whether I was a Clipper fan or a Warrior fan," he said.

2. Yeah that would be great but people paid a lot of money for those tickets

Playoff tickets no less. Hell a regular season ticket is outrageous to start with.

Just saying.

3. Mark Jackson is the opposing coach in the playoff series.

Not that I don't agree with him, but I'm sure he would love for the Clippers to not have a home court advantage whether or not Sterling had made these comments.

4. As a Warriors fan I'm a bit skeptical

since the Clippers exposed some of the Warriors' shortcomings in games 2 & 3. Game 2 was a 40-point blowout, game 3 had the Warriors committing several mistakes in a slow 4th quarter comeback that came up short thanks to a no-call foul on Stephen Curry's last-second 3-pointer.

5. What good would a boycott do unless it forced Sterling to sell?

That could be a goal for after the playoffs. It would need participation from

• Fans and season ticket holders
• Sponsors
• Free agents and players who control who they're traded to

Plus support from other owners and the commissioner's office.

6. The team already has taken in money for those ticket, AND kind of unseemly for an opposing coach....

.... to be suggesting this. I'm not positive on this but I'd bet that the playoff games are sold out or at least nearly so, a "boycott" won't keep any money out of Sterling's pockets. As already mentioned, the boycott needs to start when tickets go on sale next season.

the bigot that owns the NFL football team in Washington D.C. How does he get away with using a racial slur for a team name? Maybe this will lead to something being done about that. Why no outrage over that?

are you saying that you are only a bigot if you are the first person to make the slur, and if you come along later, you are merely perpetuating the racial slur and that is okay?

12. The current owners bought a business, so let's frame it in that realm:

The franchise is the third most valuable in the entire league, with an 82 year-old branded identity. From a business perspective, it would be sheer madness to mess with the current model and the success it has yielded. The franchise has broken the NFL's mark for single-season attendance nine years in a row, so the fans sure don't seem put off.

I'm not insensitive to the issues of racism and bigotry regarding the club name, but the world is what it is, and you are naive if you think the owners are going to cast aside the unique advantage of an established traditional sports institution, to create a new corporate identity.

8. Here's my 2 cents about boycotting the games

First it's not the players that made this heinious comment - it's the owner. If anything the players are leading the protest against the owner.

If I had paid for playoff tickets (and I know they aren't normally cheap), then I would go but I would bring a sign to show protest and perhaps I wouldn't make it a point not spend any additional money at the event so the owners cannot make any additional profit off of me.

And from an opposing team's coach? Oh please! Wouldn't the Warriors love that!

Fuck Jabba the Hut Sterling BUT...the players didn't create this mess nor did the fans...let the proper "authorities" sort out the legal and moral mess. All these idiots jumping on the bandwagon make me sick.

I hope that the team will play strong, for themselves and Los Angeles.
