MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) A 29-year-old western Montana man has been charged with deliberate homicide in the weekend shooting death of an exchange student in his garage.
Markus Kaarma of Missoula made an initial appearance in Justice Court on Monday afternoon for the felony charge filed after the death of 17-year-old Diren Dede of Hamburg, Germany. Kaarma's bail was set at $30,000.
Kaarma told police he found an intruder in his garage after an alarm went off early Sunday. Dede was shot twice.
Missoula police spokesman Travis Welsh says there was a second person in the garage with Dede, but he ran when the shots were fired. Police have questioned him.
Less than two hours before the Missoula shooting, a homeowner 350 miles away in Billings shot and wounded a houseguest he thought was an intruder. Charges are not expected in that shooting.

Unless avoiding taking vacations in countries where a neighborhood kid has been shot dead is bad manners.

(28,498 posts)The jurors heard the dramatic audio recordings Tuesday involving the homeowner who said he feared for his life after several previous break-ins.
Byron Smith, 65, is charged with first-degree premeditated murder in the slayings of cousins Nick Brady, 17, and Haile Kifer, 18, on Thanksgiving Day 2012. The retired State Department security engineer told police that, after the repeated break-ins, he was so fearful that he installed recording devices in his house.
Glass breaking and footsteps could be heard on the recordings. According to Pam Louwagie, a reporter with the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the tapes captured the moments of the fatal shootings.
The first couple of gunshots you hear are just two loud bangs, and then you hear Nick Brady groaning, Louwagie said.
After another bang, Smiths voice could be heard.
Youre dead, he said.
And soon after that, you can hear a tarp rustling, and it sounds like hes dragging Nick Brady across the carpet, Louwagie said.
Minutes later, when Kifer went into the basement, perhaps looking for Brady, Smith apparently shot her too, then quickly said, Oh, sorry about that.
But, prosecutors said, he didnt stop there, firing amid Kifers screams.
Smith told police that while Kifer was still alive, he fired the shot that killed her, what he called a good, clean finishing shot.
