Safeway to stop buying 'pink slime' beef filler

Source: MSNBC

WASHINGTON — Safeway Inc, the No. 2 supermarket operator, will stop buying the ammonia-treated beef filler critics call "pink slime" because of widespread customer concern, the company said on Wednesday.

The halt is a fresh blow to use of the ground beef filler, also known as lean finely textured beef, which has drawn criticism from food activists.

Although the Department of Agriculture and industry experts said the filler is safe, "recent news stories have caused considerable consumer concern about this product," Safeway said in a statement.

"Safeway will no longer purchase ground beef containing lean finely textured beef."

"stay tuned".... So apparently this has been in the works for a little while. Yeah. I just can't buy meat from whole foods and I am way too far away from Costco, so Safeway is my only option to avoid the pink slime.

I am pretty sure it is not in their fresh ground beef and I am positive it wont be in the sale roast you have them grind for you. (or grind yourself)

this is safer meat anyway - that crap in the chubs is from so many different animals the risk of contamination is exponentially higher than fresh ground in the store.

according to this: http://blog.timesunion.com/hottopics/who-sells-meat-with-pink-slime-heres-the-list/8877/#.T2jt0rbNNFI.facebook

So, until KS makes some kind of announcement to the contrary, I'd suggest assuming their in-house ground beef likewise contains this stuff.

They are on the middle list, which is the in-store ground meat does not use it but they sell some prepackaged versions that you can probably avoid. I just stopped buying ground meat altogther at some point long before this came out.

The tube stuff is highly suspect. I would not buy that from Kroger or anyone else. There are often bits of bone, and it does not taste right.

The meat they grind in the store seems much better. I also like Costoc meat even better, but at 12% fat it's just a little too lean for burgers.

BTW, I was in King Soopers today and the butcher was adamant that they would NOT cease selling the pink goo crap. The only beef they currently sell that does not contain it is something called "laura's choice" at $6.99/pound. Geebus. I scoffed when he tried to claim it was to render it safe from E. coli O157:H7, since the only reason they need the ammonia is because they are adding these contamination-high risk "scraps"... I (actually politely) pointed out that if that was the concern, rather than being able to stretch the meat with these low quality scrap additives, that they would be required to irradiate all meat. He looked rather glazed over at that point so I thanked him and left.

But, since Kroger's has made the move, then imagine that means KS may do so as well...

Kroger joins rivals in halting purchase of "pink slime" beef

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/03/22/us-food-slime-idUSBRE82L15920120322

WASHINGTON | Thu Mar 22, 2012 4:46pm EDT

(Reuters) - The biggest U.S. supermarket chain, Kroger Co, will stop buying the ammonia-treated beef product critics call "pink slime," bowing to consumer pressure one day after the nation's No. 2 and 3 grocers rejected the product.

Safeway Inc and Supervalu Inc said on Wednesday that they would also stop buying the product, which the meat industry calls finely textured beef.

"Our customers have expressed their concerns that the use of lean finely textured beef ... is something they do not want in their ground beef, " Kroger said in a statement, which noted that the Agriculture Department has said finely-textured beef is safe.

15. I had purchased Angus ground beef from Kroger

I would always buy the same thing which was fresh ground beef labeled Angus Chuck. I had never had a problem with it until
one particular purchase I noticed seemed very fatty and my hands were covered in fat like cheap ground beef would do. The taste was
like cardboard even though I had seasoned the patties as I always did.

The next two times the same thing and I complained to the meat department who told me their Angus already came wrapped. I also took my
complaint to customer service who said to talk to the meat department. Arggghhhh
I had thought it had been adulterated with regular ground beef while I was paying top dollar for Angus.
I haven't had a burger or purchased ground beef since.

Now I realize it was most likely pink slime. That is why it had no flavor and was "fatty" for Angus.
I don't know whether to trust a store saying they won't adulterate with pink slime when they could easily get their beef from the
supplier who added the crap before distributing to other stores.

I will get my ground beef from a butcher shop or farmers market where I can get farm fresh meat.

Simple. You will be healthier and happier. The factory farming is unhealthy, a war on the environment and subjects animals to horrific cruelty.

Always remember that you too, are made of meat.
