Benghazi Select Committee Will Have 7 Republicans, 5 Democrats
Source: talkingpointsmemo.com
The soon-to-be-formed select committee to investigate the Benghazi attacks will have 7 Republican members and 5 Democratic members, a senior GOP leadership aide confirmed to TPM on Tuesday afternoon.
That means Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) will reject a request by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) that the panel be evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats in order to be "fair."

(46,735 posts)Unfortunately, it was Obama's call to "lean forward." A good offense makes the best defense, but it was his choice to stop the investigations that would have put the Republicans on their heels.

(46,735 posts)past administrations. It will make it easier to fight the right-wing Benghazi witchhunt. But, make no mistake, we will need to step in and do our part to shout them down.
I see shades of the Clinton witchhunt repeating, because they have absolutely nothing left in their playbook.

(62,423 posts)I hope no Democrats accept the invitation. Then it will be a kangaroo court and America can see in full display what clowns the baggers are.

(218 posts)Show this farce for what it is. Every Democrat should refuse appointment to this committee. Make the Republicans staff it and spend the taxpayer's money on it and show it for the partisan witch hunt that it is. Refuse to cooperate!!!

(58 posts)If no one on our side is there to cross examine the witnesses that we know will appear, and pretty well know what they will say. Without a vigorous cross examination their statement will go unchallenged, and probably be even meaner knowing it won't be called out. That is my 2 cents.

(6,960 posts)Especially now that the 'select committee' is unbalanced, the House Democrats should not participate.
Even if a 'final report' is 'approved' in a 7-5 vote, the participation of Democrats will be used by the Repuglicans to insist that it was a credible process.
If the House Repuglicans have not been able to conduct any competent committee investigations over the last nearly two years on this matter, then why should anyone expect that they can do so now with a 'select committee'?
Let's hope that Leader Pelosi calls Boehner's bluff on this and tells him and his 'select committee' to take a hike.

(17,064 posts)An impeachment conviction will never get 67 votes in the Senate, and GOP will look every bit the fools. And Obama has the trump card... turning over evidence of BushCo war crimes to DoJ and ICC.

(17,064 posts)If the Dems are permitted to call witnesses, then there are some points to be scored... even though we know what the partisan result will be. For instance:
1) Supoena Lindsay Graham and Lara Logan to testify under oath their cozy relationship in fabricating a story.
2) Supoena members of Congress for blocking legislation funding security upgrades.
3) Supoena BushCo officials to testify about embassy attacks under shrub, and lessons learned.
So Dems can score points. If they are merely relegated to an observer role, then they can speak out about the obvious kangaroo court. None of this is possible if they boycott.
