Targeting Islamist lawmakers and officials gives hope that they desire a government without all the religious trimmings. Perhaps this will spread to other oppressed nations and help rid the world of religious dogma.

The serial killers of nations, the U.S. and NATO, struck in Libya three years ago. They broke up the country with bombs and arms supplies to "local strongmen" who didn't exist before the intervention. You don't get to blame that on the victims!

People in democracies who blithely talk of violent political action should take note. Countries, like people, can slip into these mind sets if they aren't mindful of the dangers.

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) -- An al-Qaida-inspired group in Libya said Monday it will fight troops loyal to a renegade general behind an attack on the country's parliament the day before and join forces with Islamic militias who were targeted by the general's secular followers.

The announcement by the influential Lions of Monotheism Group further adds to the quagmire in Libya, three years after the overthrow of dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

On Sunday, forces loyal to Gen. Khalifa Hifter, a former rebel in the fight against Gadhafi, stormed the parliament in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, saying they were suspending the house in a struggle against Islamist lawmakers and officials whom they blame for allowing extremists to hold the country ransom.

The attack saw militia members backed by truck-mounted anti-aircraft guns, mortars and rocket fire raid the parliament building in the heart of Tripoli, sending lawmakers fleeing for their lives as gunmen ransacked the legislature.

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Libya's army chief has ordered the deployment of Islamist-led militias to the capital, a day after the storming of the parliament building in Tripoli by a renegade general's troops.

Monday's development paves way for a possible showdown between the militias — which hail from Libya's western and central regions — and the anti-Islamist troops allied with Gen. Khalifa Hifter, who staged the parliament attack Sunday and said they suspended the Islamist-dominated house, blaming it for empowering Islamic extremists.

According to a statement posted on the official Facebook page of Libya's Chief of Staff media office, Nouri Abu Sahmain signed an order to "Libya's Central Shield" — an umbrella group of powerful militias — to confront "attempts to take over power" in Tripoli.

Sunday's move against parliament appeared to be directly challenging the legitimacy of the country's weak central government three years after the overthrow of dictator Moammar Gadhafi. Libya's leadership condemned the attack and vowed to carry on.
