Four in five Germans want fewer foreign military missions - poll

BERLIN (Reuters) - Four in five Germans would like to see their armed forces take part in fewer military missions and almost two-thirds think Germany should keep a cautious stance on foreign affairs, a poll found, signalling little backing for leaders' recent calls to do more.
Germany's president, defence minister and foreign minister pledged a more prominent foreign and security role at the start of 2014, declaring that the country could no longer watch from the sidelines.
That message was welcomed by allies anxious to share the costs and the burdens of international missions. It also gave reassurance after Germany's shock decision to opt out of any military involvement in Libya in 2011.
According to the poll of 1,000 people, commissioned by the Koerber foundation, 82 percent would like to see fewer military missions for the Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces.
Whilst in 1994, 62 percent wanted to see Germany engage more on the international stage, twenty years on 60 percent preferred to see Germany remain cautious.

(12,504 posts)the Germans do not have to worry about going on military missions. We have more than enough of a military presence to cover any part of Germany that feels threatened.

(3,596 posts)to want to avoid sending their men and women in harm's way on foreign "adventures" some of which are arguably in Germany's national interest and some are their contribution to a more remote interest. They don't want to spent a lot on defense, certainly not for foreign adventures that have little to do with German security. They also don't want to keep having to bail the rest of Europe out of irresponsible fiscal policies.
I get that...
But I am also tired of the U.S. continuing, after nearly 70 years from the end of WWII, to shoulder the majority of responsibility, cost in terms of dollars, materiel, men and women to protect not only our interests but those of our allies such as Germany.
At some point we need to cut back on our military spending and our overseas deployments and tell our allies it is up to them to fill the void.
I don't advocate isolationism but would like to reasonably reduce the federal budget and deficit including a significant "re-direction" of money we would spend on the military to investments in our infrastructure, education, jobs, green energy, etc.
After 70 years it is time for our allies in Europe to shoulder some burden for their own defense.
