Sudanese woman sentenced to death for refusing to recant her Christian faith gives birth

Source: strib

The independent Al-Sudani and Akhbar Al Youm dailies reported that 27-year-old Meriam Ibrahim gave birth to a girl Tuesday at the clinic at the Omdurman women's prison near the capital, Khartoum.

Ibrahim, who is married to a Christian man, was sentenced to death by hanging for apostasy. In light of her pregnancy, the judge allowed her two months to deliver her child and two years for breast-feeding before her execution.

Ibrahim's lawyer Al-Shareef Ali al-Shareef Mohammed said her Muslim father left her mother when she was a child, and she was raised by her mother who is an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian.

A Khartoum court also ordered that Ibrahim be given 100 lashes for having what it considers illegal sexual relations with her husband, Daniel Wani, a Christian from southern Sudan who has U.S. citizenship, according to the lawyer and judicial officials who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Mohammed said he intends to appeal her conviction.

How do these judges and persecutors live with themselves?

Oh, right, 'it's the law'..... Fucking assholes.
If I believed in hell I would hope that these fuckers end up there.

Maybe she still wouldn't be allowed out of the country. She may also have the (mistaken) notion that she'll go to hell if she recants.

Her life afterward - if she recanted - could be worse in her eyes than death. They'd hardly treat her with kindness and courtesy!

I think they are sayong they consider her Muslim since her father was, and are upset that she says she isn't and maybe because her kods having a Christian dad can not be considered Muslim?

Fundamentalist tribal crap may gave meant at one time the continuation of the tribe, but now? Bah. Hopefully she and others will be able to get things changed or at minimun asylumed elsewhere.

making sex an act of adultery no matter what she does, but the truly interesting detail here is that her husband is apparently an American citizen-I'm not sure what legal status that gives her or the children but it seem some type of intervention by our government could be in order here
She has a 2 year reprieve from the death penalty-time maybe for diplomacy

The son she's been imprisoned with will turn two next month -- he'll probably be taken away and put up for adoption.

As for her being the spouse of a US citizen, that would depend when or where the marriage took place. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't get the feeling that she has ever been on US soil.

a Muslim woman may not marry a non-Muslim man unless he converts.

That's what makes the marriage "adulterous."

Why doesn't this woman just do the recanting thing and get on with her life?

It is a ridiculous law and any government using religion as their law is insane anyway. Another question is why does any modern country give them anything while they are killing innocent people and acting barbaric?

she'd then be charged with adultery, right now she has 2 years because she just gave birth to a child , however her husband is an American citizen, perhaps this is the angle that could be worked

However, relations between both countries have, at least, the hope of improving due to President Obama's sending of Special Envoy Scott Gration to Sudan to improve diplomatic conditions, and discuss ways to avert the current Darfur conflict. On September 9, 2009, the United States has published a new law to ease the sanctions on parts of Sudan. Obama named Donald E. Booth as his special envoy for Sudan and South Sudan on 28 August 2013

if they had enough power, then you're living in a fantasy world. The only thing that would change would be the names. Then a Christian could be convicted and severely punished - perhaps including execution - for marrying a Jew. Or God forbid, a Muslim or Buddhist! Think about that if you decide to sit home on your ass on election day. We get the government that we (collectively) deserve.
