'BRADY BUNCH'
ALICE DEAD AT 88
After Bathroom Fall
TV legend Ann B. Davis who played Alice on "The Brady Bunch" has died ... TMZ has learned.
According to the couple she lived with in Texas ... Ann fell in her bathroom early this morning and hit her head causing grave damage. We're told she never regained consciousness.
Her roommate says Davis had been pretty healthy for an 88-year old woman -- and her death was a total shock. In fact, she even walked downstairs to say goodnight before going to bed.
Davis played the housekeeper Alice Nelson for the entire original run of "The Brady Bunch" from 1969 to 1974. She also filled the role for countless other TV movies and reunions. She last played Alice for 5 episodes of "The Bradys" in 1990.

(63,912 posts)hubby has had two spinal surgeries and he takes his walker right up to the bathroom. We have safety bars in the tub and he has a handicapped tub seat. Our downstairs half bath has a handicapped toilet seat. I am scared to death of him falling in the bathroom as he takes blood thinners...he could bleed to death if he fell and hit his head...

(34,136 posts)Before we moved into this house, I had several times when I had to use a walker, and other safety equipment. When we designed this house, we made it all wheelchair accessible, safety rails all over the place in the bathrooms, a shower where we can sit while bathing, and lots of other features that have improved our safety for our old age (we're both in our early 60s).
Another thing to do is to see if you can get some sessions with an occupational therapist. They don't so much help you work as teach you ways to manage when you are impaired. It's simple things, like how to avoid falls, safer ways to wash, dress, do everyday chores.
At the same time I was getting physical therapy after my knee replacements, I also got occupational therapy. It's helped a lot. Since then, my Dad before his death and now my Mom have had therapists come into their home to help access the safety and to advise them on ways to avoid falls.
I think it's a good idea for everyone to have at least a couple of sessions with an OT as they age as a preventative measure. I know it made me think about ways I was doing things to make life safer.

(21,478 posts)At my mid 60s, I'm finding not so much. Maybe time for retirement, despite the Kochs wanting me to work till my grave.

(34,136 posts)After that, things just don't heal so good - and that was 20 years ago.
When I was in the rehab hospital after the first knee replacement, I scoffed at the idea of occupational therapy. But they showed me safe ways to do ordinary tasks. I'm glad I have that information. I may not need it right now, in between injuries, surgeries and wearing parts out, but it's come in handy with the two knee replacements, carpal tunnel surgery on both hands, and the growing weakness I have from not being able to keep active. I wish I had that information when dealing with my shoulder injuries and when my knees first started giving me problems, not to mention my bad back.
Getting old sucks, but knowing how to deal with the effects helps.

(4,913 posts)Falls are one of the leading causes of death and disability for seniors. I work for a local legislature and we did a Falls Prevention Program and designated the third week of September "Fall Prevention Month". I have copied a link to information about fall prevention.

A lot of parents got the "Why can't WE have a maid?" noise as a result of that woman!
Another sad milepost on the road of time...
