Reddit, Imgur and Boing Boing launch anti-NSA-surveillance campaign

Source: Guardian

Some of the world's largest websites are planning a coordinated day of action on Thursday to oppose mass surveillance online.

The sites, which include Reddit, Imgur and BoingBoing, will be taking part in the campaign, called "Reset the Net", in a number of ways.

Some will showing a splash screen to all users, reminiscent of the one used in the successful protests against SOPA, the US copyright bill which many feared would damage the backbone of the internet. But rather than telling users to write to their electoral representatives, this protest will push more direct action, encouraging visitors to install privacy and encryption tools.

Other sites have committed to improving their own privacy as part of the campaign, by enabling standards such as HTTPS, which prevents attackers from eavesdropping on visitors. Such security standards are common in the world of ecommerce, but rarer for sites which don't think of themselves as holding sensitive information.

"We can take back control of our personal and private data one website, one device, one internet user at a time," said Reddit's General Manager Erik Martin. "We’re proud to stand up for our users’ rights and help Reset the Net."

Some people take defending NSA crimes very seriously as it's their #1 cause and purpose here. The leaders at NSA are traitors. Conflating Bhenghazi just shows how desperate they are to make people not pay attention and see that our lives are being subverted by evil, corrupt power brokers who trade in information. These charlatans are the East German Stasi on steroids and we need to make severe laws restraining them. Appeasement is the wrong strategy as down the line they could easily ruin our country and the good citizens who have been putting up with their BS so far.

Why post so vehemently supporting NSA then? I take NSA seriously. That's why I comment. Most Americans do as there is nothing more offensive and personally off putting than what NSA is doing regarding our intimate family lives. I remember tactics equating non-related crap like this when Bush lied about WMD to trick us into war with Iraq where all the NSA supported private contractors got extremely wealthy. There are more millionaires in Maryland and Northern Virginia because of this shady, hoodwinking corruption than ever before. They broke the record book. We get it. You want us to think you think like we do because you say you think Bundy is an idiot tool of others. But we are examining facts and details...not alliances or " the enemy of my enemy is my friend" pitches. NSA has a big job. Monitor everyone for the .01%'s military contractor's benefit whether it be the main arm of DEA's failed, unpopular but enriching drug war or gaining leverage against high profile figures like judges, journalists, politicians, attorneys etc to advance their own selfish agendas.

Fighting evil that lurks hidden in high places is never easy especially when those in your own ranks are subverting you. But as a retired activist I can tell you we had to put up with this sort of thing for decades as it is nothing new although technology has aided the enemies of freedom and free discourse immensely. When we marched on Reagen and later Bush Sr we were infiltrated and subverted at every turn by those telling us to blend in and accept injustice. It was seen as radical not to support Latin American death squads or foreign incursions by the moderates who wanted to play ball but it changed because how long can deception and death be defended or even tolerated? I see the NSA as the most Un-American group there is within our borders but so are many of their adjunct organizations, private contractors (who rule them at this point) and sister law enforcement agencies. Every single president after JFK has been afraid to mess with these guys but karma will set things right in the end but not without the hard work of those opposing these criminals like Reddit and Imgur etc. They are Real Americans.

Instead of a poll, perhaps they could spend some money for busses to go to DC at a reduced price.

"These guys" have been busy with SOPA and other assaults against internet privacy in the past, so this isn't their first time doing something -- far more than the NSA gofers busy nibbling around this site, say -- about the privacy / surveillance incursions we're up against it.

I can't tell if you are serious, or using some kind of satire.

Maybe you just don't know how the government works.
